Other D&D Variant Basic Fantasy - Anybody here regularly play it? Why yes, why not?

Years ago I read a review and the game seemed like a limited clone of B/X with ascending AC. No comparison to the Rules Cyclopedia in terms of options (strongholds, dominions, 36 levels, advanced combat features and more). But BFRPG isn't terrible.

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

When you take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance, the guy who tells you a story about how you need a new $5,000 transmission that isn't covered by your warranty is "a narrative mechanic" :sneaky:

Modern AGE Powers Pre-order starts today.

I was waiting on this too. Jack Norris was in on it and he's done a ton of supers-related work I really liked. M&M's Cosmic Handbook is incredible. MA Powers is supplement sized (181 pgs), but covers a lot of ground for supers. Looks like the Green Ronin Youtube channel has an interview with at...

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Waitaminnit. You're suggesting: The possibility of doing normal damage > guaranteed half damage? Maybe I'll give you $5 later this week > Here's $2.50 now? If that works for you, fine - but IME combat is too deadly to depend on "possibilities". And my whole point here is comparing low to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

IME people don't go hard with illusions because once an opponent realizes your using them, the illusions' value diminishes greatly. I'd add that the people most concerned with the rules are GMs and Rules-Lawyers, who represent a small minority within the greater ttrpg community. Great thread 🤓

Rant: The WORST way to encourage people to try other games than D&D

"There's no such thing as 'bad publicity'." I'd rather have people slamming my product online than saying nothing at all 🤓

How Long Do You Wait Before You Houserule a New TTRPG?

I'm a fan of the AD&D 1e Assassin's Backstab, which had a 50% chance of outright slaying the target regardless of its Hit Points :p Should be revisited with the Rogue subclass IMO.

    D&D 5E (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

Yeah sometimes we can miss the forest for the trees. Definitely the situation here. There has to be a point where the rule ends and common sense takes over. Otherwise, core rulebooks would be 2-3 times bigger than they already are because the designers has to explain every use of words like...

How Long Do You Wait Before You Houserule a New TTRPG?

After I read a good review of the game, I'll have a basic understanding of what I'm changing (like converting dice pools to 1d20). But I won't make the definitive changes until after playing it. It's like, converting Shadowrun to d20 is far more complicated than just switching dice. Like most...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

I laughed at "adventuring non-adventurer type" :ROFLMAO: Sure, you can make it, but I don't get the "why?" The Everyman works for "Can I RP a normal person?" type games perfectly. The problem is when it runs into D&D, where the PCs are NOT normal people. And I get that previous editions did...

    D&D 5E (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

How is this a high DC? One is a cantrip, the other a 1st-level spell. Not difficult compared to the majority of spells requiring a save. Are you suggesting physical interaction is difficult? What do you mean by "high threshold"? What other activities? The time spent studying an object is...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

When you think about it, The Everyman is a bad concept. "Class" is equivalent to a character's profession: what they do for a living. Fighter's fight. Thieves steal. Clerics pray, heal and fight. Mages use magic. It's what they do and their capabilities allow them to survive dungeons and slay...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

I don't see a divide at all. "Class" has always represented a PC's profession and role in the party. Pretty straightforward. Looks more like a DCC campaign because that system specializes in 0-Level to Hero-Level. Exactly the way you plan to do it, as well.

This is why I ask players what their playstyle preferences are and what they want from a campaign - to help avoid unnecessary conflict. 99.9% of all problems at the table boil down to playstyle (y) https://www.sjgames.com/robinslaws/ https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/395345
