Good advice, but some jurisdictions have mandatory publicity rules for lottery winners. There’s ways around it- I’ve seen some people accept their winnings in costumes- but even those may be thwarted if they publish the names.

I get the hate HOAs generate. I know their roots. I’ve seen how petty they can be. OTOH, I’ve also seen times when their rules had positive impacts on the neighborhoods…IF they’re not being run by total knobs. Ours, for instance, has some rules that would normally be part of city code...

With some stuff- at least down here- you really do need to get HOA approval first because the contractors won’t start the job without clearance. That was the case with our fence replacement. Unfortunately for us in that case, the combination of getting that clearance and being good neighbors...

I’ve handled most of the interactions with our HOA. Some of the issues were definitely due to petty people flexing their muscles. I handled them with carefully rated correspondence that hinted my position was strong, without being antagonistic. Think Teddy Roosevelt. So far, I’m undefeated...
