    Best single volume RPG?

For me, hands down the best 1 book RPG is DragonQuest, 2nd Edition. Great fantasy game with lots of flexibility, a creative method of character creation, magic that is interesting, and dragons that are creatures to be feared and avoided. Lots of fun, I played it for years. Oh, and as for most...

D&D 4E Should hit points continue to be generated randomly in 4e?

Then you would like the way I run rolling hit points for my 3.0 game. For first level, you get the max hit points for your class, modified by CON. For second level and higher, you roll the appropriate hit die and modify it by CON. That's it. In other words, we follow the rules in the PH, and...

D&D 4E David Noonan on 4E "Cloudwatching" (Added Dave's newest comment from his blog)

Woo-hoo! I love being in a minority! I am in an even smaller group who did not switch from 3.0 to 3.5, and don't plan to switch to 4.0 either. Unless my players start buying the books for me, I have no plans to repurchase (AGAIN!) the core books. I got 1st ed AD&D, I even bought the core...

    Renaming the G-word (hint: fighter-mages)

How about mage-glaive-warrior, or just about any combination of mage, warrior, and an AD&D1e polearm? Seriously, for me, fighter/magic-user works just fine.

    Here’s what I want to see…

Here’s what I want to see… I guess you could call this an open letter/list of questions for Wizards of the Coast. I don’t really expect that any sort of response will come of this, but I wanted to say what I have to say. That being the case, let’s begin. So far, what I have seen of the...

What do you think so far?

You may have missed the line right before it which read: I am not claiming it is exactly like youth athletics. I am not even saying you should compare them. I am just saying that to me the new edition reminds me of what is done in youth athletics.

What do you think so far?

I will be perfectly honest, I am not impressed with what I have seen so far. It's just not grabbing me, making me excited about the whole thing. Right now it looks like D&D is going in a direction that I disagree with and find objectionable in many ways. In many ways it reminds me of youth...

D&D 4E Should hit points continue to be generated randomly in 4e?

Here's my final thought on the subject of random hit points. If you don't like rolling for your hit points, then don't. Use the average, the maximum, or some other way of calculating. However, don't remove the option for those of us who do like it. If rolling dice for HP is presented as the...

D&D 4E Should hit points continue to be generated randomly in 4e?

That often times depends on the DM or the group's preference. I have played in OD&D games where you roll them in order (AD&D 1e too) and others where you roll and then place them.

If you play DnD, how old are you?

I am the magical age of 42. Oh, and for the record, 40 is not middle aged! That means you are only going to live till 80, and I plan on living longer than that!

D&D 4E Should hit points continue to be generated randomly in 4e?

I guess this shows the different mindset of different types of gamers. Just about everyone I have ever played with comes to D&D with a blank slate when it comes to character creation. You roll the dice, see what stats you get, and then you decide on what sort of character you are going to...

D&D 4E Should hit points continue to be generated randomly in 4e?

OKay, just to lay this thing to rest, Traveller did indeed start out with the possibility of character death during creation. However, in later printings and in all the later editions (MegaTraveller, Traveller:The New Era, etc.) this is but one option. Another option was made to allow those...

D&D 4E Should Ability Scores in 4E Be Randomly Determined?

Funny, but my experience has been just the opposite. The most abusive min/max players I have ever encountered have always been ones using a point buy system. Now, admittedly, most of those are not D&D players, but it is true none the less.

How long are your weekly rpg sessions?

My gaming group does not meet weekly. We have a gaming season, which starts in late October and runs through the end of May. We play every other Sunday during that time, from noon to 6:00pm. We take a short break in there for a late lunch/dinner time, usually around 3:00 or 4:00. What we eat...

D&D 4E Should Ability Scores in 4E Be Randomly Determined?

I hate the whining I get when someone says, "Oh man, I just need 2 more points to make my dream character!" Or how about, "Why can't we play with 30 points this time instead of 25? That's so limiting!" Point buy character creation brings out just as much, if not more, whining as random...

D&D 4E Should Ability Scores in 4E Be Randomly Determined?

I agree with you, it is a matter of taste. I know that I have had just the opposite experience that you have had. I do not know a single D&D player who uses a determinist method of character creation. They all use a random (i.e., dice rolling) method. That is the method I prefer, and the...

D&D 4E Should Ability Scores in 4E Be Randomly Determined?

DragonQuest had a method for doing this. You rolled on a table which showed you the number of points you had to spend on attributes and a maximum attribute value. You could have one attribute at the max. value, two at (max-1) value, and the rest at (max-2) value. At least I think that is how...

D&D 4E Should hit points continue to be generated randomly in 4e?

Good lord, if I want to play a fantasy game where attributes are done with a point buy system and hit points are determined by a formula, then I might as well play GURPS instead of D&D. I am sorry that a lot of people online seem to feel that random generation of attributes and hit points...

    D&D 4E Will you buy 4e?

I have no idea if I will ever buy it, but currently I would say no. I just don't feel the excitement that I felt when 3e brought me back to playing D&D. The new edition doesn't look like it is being designed for me. There are a lot of things about what I have seen that do not impress me, so I...

    Target Demographic?

Let's see, my demographic profile looks something like this: Age: 42 Years of gaming: 28 Average age of current gaming group: 41 Ratio of men to women in gaming group: 1:1 (we're split pretty evenly, actually) Current version of D&D being played: 3.0 Video game player?: No Computer game player...
