    I'm almost afraid to ask...

:p Your opinion has been noted and will be placed in our suggestion box. Having a component pouch seems like a great compromise, he'd usually have a hand free anyway for a ventriloquist dummy or hand puppet. A marionette can often need two hands, but many don't. Operating the puppet *is* the...

    I'm almost afraid to ask...

The multiple dolls concept is do-able. I was going to give him proficiency in woodcarving so he could make his own puppets anyway. Inspirations for this included "Trilogy of Terror," the Chucky movies, and the "Blood Brothers" Call of Cthulhu adventure book. And a dash of Gepetto. This build...

    I'm almost afraid to ask...

I've been working on a couple of character concepts for 4th season, and wanted some perspectives on one of them. I'd like to do a variant human Gur ethnicity Bard. When he fights, he prefers to debuff and insult the enemy from the rear. Frequent use of the vicious mockery cantrip, think Don...

DDAL Guide: Customizing Starting Gear in AL

In your own time. I sat down and ran some numbers myself and concluded that there wasn't much to sell, most of the value is in the holy water and that just didn't make sense to sell.

    D&D 5E (2014) Damage question

Thanks, I was uncertain largely in a "that's too good to be true" sort of way. Very happy they stack.

    D&D 5E (2014) Damage question

I'm a little puzzled about saving throws and damage resistance, and how they affect each other or don't. Here's the example that lead to the question: A (let's call it a 20 HP fireball) spell goes off, my barbarian PC is in its area of effect. He rolls and succeeds on his saving throw, so he...

DDAL Guide: Customizing Starting Gear in AL

Kalani, Time to add the Haunted One background and the Monster Hunter's pack? Am I missing it, or is the Monster Hunter's pack from CoS the only place to get a premade wooden stake? I'm sure most DMs would allow a PC with most bladed weapons and access to a fallen tree branch to make a...

Have we failed to discourage min-maxing?

I played Call of Cthulhu for about 4 years, and the DM encouraged RP over combat with: * liberal use of Inspiration rewards for good roleplay * you didn't need to roll at all for things like persuasion and intimidation if your roleplay was good. If your stated goal is to tone down min/max...

    Vistani PCs

Not being well versed in Ravenloft, do the Gur have their own language, and is a speaker of Gur intelligible to a Vistani and vice versa? Presumably a PC with a specific ethnicity would speak that ethnic language (if it exists) as well as common and possibly others, depending on education.

    Vistani PCs

Just for fun: if a player had a character who was variant human with the Magic Initiate feat, would there be any issue with them stating their ethnicity as "Gur?" Not that there'd be an expectation of a benefit from interaction with Vistani, just that that seems to be as close as one could get...

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

The term "Gypsy" doesn't even appear in the module. Even if it does get used by a DM, I'm still not sure there's a problem, because the Gur are revealed to be frightened desperate people rather than evil by choice. The prejudice voiced by the villagers gets its fangs pulled in the story, so...

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

So if my house was used as a meeting space for the KKK I need to spend the rest of my life assuring people I don't support that? No, I'm not buying that. WoTC and the writers it contracts with are responsible for their actions, and don't need to disclaimer everything to death over content...

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

I've had a quick look around, and noticed something interesting: Both the "Realm of Terror" and "Heroes' Lorebook" supplements mentioned as inflammatory were not even published by WoTC. They were published when the rights were owned by TSR. Some other Ravenloft stuff was apparently published by...

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

Haven't read those, wasn't aware of them. If the objection is to those parts of the lore, perhaps then the complaint should be against re-releasing either without a bit more attention in the editing department. Such blatant ethnic stereotyping is, in addition to being offensive to the targets...

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

I've now read the module. I don't see a great deal to object to. The slur "gypsy" is never used. That settled townsfolk are often distrustful of nomads (and often for good reason, nomads are often in desperate situations) is a simple fact of sociology probably predating written history, and is...

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

I'll form my own opinion on the content itself once I've read it or played it, thank you. The response seems perfectly reasonable to me.

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

I keep circling back to remembering the recurring kerfuffle over teaching Twain's "Huck Finn" in schools, on the grounds that a certain unpleasant word is used. The complainers invariably missed the point that Jim was shown to be head and shoulders a better human being than the bigoted whites...

    Help with my Paladin

Oath of Vengeance? How about having him work part-time as a bounty hunter for the local authorities? If it's a small town, just starting up, maybe rope him into being the new sherriff? (I'm definitely cribbing from HBO's Deadwood there.)

D&D 5E (2014) The Joy of Wild Sorcery - Post your amazing surge stories here!

The way I understood it: ToC: use, then DM can roll on the D100 table or not. Purely their discretion, not necessarily reset by using a spell. The DM I played that fight with liked surges so every time I used ToC I immediately got a D100 roll to refresh. For about 4 rounds I was using it every...
