I let my players keep their levels. No loss or negative to hit or anything, but they loose XP. A level 10 that died, would looks 10-1=9*1000=9000 xp. If he died again he looses another 9k xp. He needs to make up for the XP before he can level again. It seems to work fine and no one complains...

In a very old game, I allowed a charmander as a familiar. It was second ed, so I figured the stronger the wizard the more powerful the familiar. Also the IN for Pikachu should be higher. he has at times shown that he is more intelligent than his trainer. lol

Had it been second edition, I would have suggested Old Empires. Most of the older stuff can still be stripped of their story and NPC names, it's just the system and stats that changed.
