    OotS #768

Not to digress, but I hadn't noticed that new feature. I'm not entirely fond of the new tag designs, but that's a nifty little feature.

Does the GM Need To Know the Rules?

Yep... Simply put, I agree. And that's kind of my point as well. You need to know enough rules to run a game, but exactly what "enough" means can be highly dependent from game to game.

Does the GM Need To Know the Rules?

But, the point is... You still had to know the rules well enough to run the game. You just didn't have to read the rule book to learn them.

    Ideas for Replacing Cable TV

No, that's cool... Just presenting it as another alternative that people don't often consider. For us, unplugging the TV from antennas and cables and dishes, and instead focusing on collecting a video library was something that gave us "a near equivalent alternative and save money".

    Taxes!

Yep... There's tons of stuff on the web that claim to be "primers", but are either terribly confusticated, or overly simplified. It's hard to extract any useful information from them. So let me just a little more specific... The major change in our lives is the new house. I need to be able...

    Ideas for Replacing Cable TV

Something else to consider... Unplug. We haven't had our television hooked up to a satellite dish, cable or antenna for close to twelve years. Honestly, we don't miss it. We still have a Blu-ray player and a VCR, and have instead been collecting a wall full of video library ever since. We...

    Taxes!

Okay... Last summer, we bought a house for the first time, and am starting to look at what it takes to itemize deductions. Up until now, we've always used the fairly quick and easy 1040A form. We've never really needed anything more complicated, since our finances have been pretty...

How do you deal with food and shelter?

That's about how I look at it as well... Most of the time, we ignore it. We presume that the characters, who are professional adventurers, are competent enough at their jobs to appropriately prepare for the length and climate of the journey they are about to undertake (even if the players...

D&D 4E Tomb of Horrors (4E version) - anyone run this yet?

I'd be curious to compare notes with you... I'm planning something similar -- Tomb of Horrors set in Dark Sun -- for the next time my players are ready to start a new campaign.

Stores too cheap to turn the lights on

Costco stores use big skylights and then keep the overhead lights completely turned off during daylight hours. It works great, except on the gloomiest, stormiest days. I'm always surprised more big box and warehouse type stores don't do it. EDIT: It turns out, on further investigation, that...

Sleep is the most worthless spell

Also consider the Level 15 Daily Slumber of the Winter Court -- the paragon version meant to replace Sleep. It has the same range, area and attack as Sleep, but... Hit: The target is dazed and slowed (save ends both). First Failed Saving Throw: The target instead falls unconscious. The...

One Thing You Can Do to Become a Better DM

If you have a printer that uses wax-based toner, print on it first, then age it. Also, if you put the paper on a cookie sheet, you can put in the oven on the very lowest setting ("Warm & Hold" or ~200F-250F)... It'll dry a lot faster, and get good and crackly around the edges.

One Thing You Can Do to Become a Better DM

Another tip for accents and funny voices... Don't do them all the time. Unless you do impressions for a living, it can get really hard to keep up an accent for any length of time. After a while, the accent drifts, it gets tiresome to listen to, and it loses it's impact with the players...

One Thing You Can Do to Become a Better DM

On a similar note, I've found that, instead of generic accents, I associate each of my important NPCs with an actor or a character from the movies. For example, I've got a creepy, but not exactly evil necromancer that PCs buy all their magic stuff from, because he got the widest variety and...

    Summonings

Of course they're different... It's like the difference between "lying" and "not telling the truth". Telling a lie is one way of not telling the truth, but you don't have to lie to not tell the truth. Likewise, just because you don't have the ability to make an Opportunity Attack, that...

    Summonings

By directing you to page 137 of Arcane Power, where it specifically states that familiars can't flank. Yep, you've got that right.

    Summonings

I'm not arguing in any way with the conceptual inconsistency of the idea -- I'm not even saying that I necessarily agree with the way the rule works -- only that by the logic of the rules as written, that would seem to be the way it'd work... If that Dretch gets Dazed or Stunned, it would stop...

    Summonings

Well, let's look at the whole bit then, shall we? Must Be Able to Attack: You and your ally must be able to attack the enemy, whether you’re armed or unarmed. If there’s no line of effect between your enemy and either you or your ally, you don’t flank. If you’re affected by an effect that...
