    Vanilla Realms and Strawberry Fields

I've got to agree with this sentiment. I think that the reason why the Realms sell so well is because they are such a vanilla setting. After all, it's so obviously just Earth, with a twist, and not a particularly inventive twist at that.

[OT]Would you be interested in group writing fiction?

Re: Sanctuary anyone? I know the thieve's world stories very well - I once owned all twelve anthologies. In fact, these stories inspired me to suggest something similar on a Baldur's Gate fanfic site called the Attic. It's still running. The way it works is that we have an agreed setting - the...

    technology timeline

Historians have traditionally pointed to increased food production capacity as the necessary pre-condition for the industrial revolution. Enhancments to agrarian efficiency, in the form of seed sewing techniques and machines, meant that fewer people were needed to produce the same amount of food...

    [Very OT] Woohoo!

Hey, we're also from Ireland (county Cork though) and according to our family crest, there's a chance that there's some nobility in our line. However, given what I know about my family history there's a good cahnce that my ancestors were transported as convicts during the potato famine meaning...

    GM Techniques

A question I'm curious about: What techniques do you as a GM (or DM if you prefer) typically use to run your games? SOme background to what I'm thinking. I love maps, pictures and visual aids - half my scenario prep time can be burned looking for that one piece of artwork that captures the...

I'm a newbie to the boards, but if people will have me, I'll be in.

    Fantasy gods, religion, and philosophy

Re: Re: Fantasy gods, religion, and philosophy Actually, it's a misinterpretation of Campbell's use of the word "myth". THe common secular use of the word myth is "a story or proposition which is held by some to be factual but which is in reality false or fictitious." eg. urban legends. The...

    Fantasy gods, religion, and philosophy

Not that I'm an expert, but this thread is too juicy for me not to take a major bite. First of all, how powerful is this god you're 'fake' worshipping? If they can read minds, then your lip service may only serve to PO them even worse than if you didn't worship. One of the things which has...

    Fantasy gods, religion, and philosophy

Uhmm I just finished and submitted my PhD thesis and I had to take Campbell pretty seriously to do it. (NB. I didn't agree with him necessarily, I just had to take him seriously) Perhaps "debunked" is little strong?

    Favorite Setting of All Time?

Showing my age!!! I voted other and wited to see if people would accept a non D&D setting since they have - the Glorantha wins, hands down (IMHO). For those of you too young to know, Glorantha is the setting that Runequest was based in. I have yet to see a world with as rich and complex a...

Most ridiculous thing about Epic Rules

I would, but I've got this desparate hope that my ideas will soon be the intellectual property of WOTC.;) Perhaps after August.

Most ridiculous thing about Epic Rules

So basically, you lorded your maturity - both as a person and as a player - over a bunch of young teens because they were playing like...a bunch of young teens. When I was thirteen, that style of play used to thrill me too. When I grew up, I put off childish things. Snobbery of older gamers...

WotC Seeking Your Setting Proposals (was "Big Wizard announcement")

As a professional writer of non-fiction (I'm an historian and an educational researcher) I have to say that I come down on the side of saying that two to three hours, in most cases, cannot have been enough to get out your best work. Sure, when I'm writing first draft I can bang out about six...

WotC Seeking Your Setting Proposals (was "Big Wizard announcement")

I think that seeing this in terms of a contest is a misnomer. It's really a call for expressions of interest in tendering for a development project. I think that's why Wizards has been so strict on the submission guidelines and why they're putting it through so many stages. It's not a lottery...

WotC Seeking Your Setting Proposals (was "Big Wizard announcement")

Re: What are people actually writing? This was my feeling all along. Mine came out a lot more like the blurb from the back of the campaign setting box/book than a one page summary of a world. 'Course I could be completely wrong. Many folks are talking about "explaining" their world within the...

Fantasy Setting Proposal: Sent yours in yet?

1 submission; Courier New; 11pt font. Printed question and number followed by answer (even put "7. Name:****") For those who've not had the experience before, this was a lot like a tender writing process - stage one "Expression of Interest". Thousands of people around the world expressing a...

WotC Seeking Your Setting Proposals (was "Big Wizard announcement")

Re: Thanks I want to echo this sentiment. The only problem for me is that I only came looking after I'd sent my submission off. Reading this thread - all 35+ pages - has been a most schizophrenic (sp?) experience. Zulkir's comments have been informative and really encouraging - especially...
