D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Forgotten Realms: Why can't you just ignore the lore?

I've played in the Realms for decades and only run into Elminster once and you know what his role was in the adventure? Sage. He gave us some background on something we found and helped us figure soemthing out. That's it. No problems and no adventures ruined or players made to feel powerless.

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Forgotten Realms: Why can't you just ignore the lore?

The movers and shakers from the novels are only a problem if players and DMs let them be a problem. Ed Greenwood has said many times that Elminster isn't there to solve problems instead of players. He said we should assume that Elminster is off doing his own thing most of the time and can't be...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Forgotten Realms: Why can't you just ignore the lore?

Hussar: The problem with Tiamat and the Realms isn't that she doesn't have some history there. She does. The problem is that she hadn't been banished to the nine hells for centuries like the beginning of Tyranny of Dragons fluff suggests. And, she's really not that importnat a goddess in the...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Forgotten Realms: Why can't you just ignore the lore?

Lore can be a strength too. History can give players and DMs lots of cool ideas for backgrounds, adventures, etc. edit: Honestly, lore is only a problem and hangup if you let it be. I studied history in College. If I'm writing about WWII, I don't have to know nor would I expect my readers...

D&D 5E (2014) I believe the Greyhawk Campaign setting was a missed opportunity for Wizards of the Coast.

Thanks for the reminders there Merric. I read the Gord the Rogue books and the old modules so long ago that I had forgotten what happened in them. Relating that to what they did in 4E gives us a pretty good idea at least of what they might be thinking about...that's a good post.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG question: attunement

I was going through the magic items of the new %E DMG and reading up on attunement and such. I get that attunement is supposed to be a method of balancing and controlling magic items. What I don't understand is how WOTC arrived at what items do or do not require attunement. Boot of...

D&D 5E (2014) I believe the Greyhawk Campaign setting was a missed opportunity for Wizards of the Coast.

It's sad that one of the oldest settings has seen the least amount of "love" and good development.

Planescape PLANESCAPE Classic Setting in PDF

They could do new adventures, website support, new novels, a new videogame, etc. Lots of options....not all of which cost a lot of money. They just have to have the will to do so...

Covers Preview for Elemental Evil Adventurer's Handbook and Princes of the Apocalypse!

I didn't say anything about D&D not being about fun. It's entertainment. Of course, it's about fun. I was talking about quality of product not its reason for being.

Covers Preview for Elemental Evil Adventurer's Handbook and Princes of the Apocalypse!

It seems to me that people's reaction to the notion that WOTC might be using a Greyhawk baddie in the Realms are really about two (related things): artistic integrity and creativity. As in people are concerned that ripping off Greyhawk doesn't show a whole lot of either. Given the wholesale...

    D&D 5E (2014) Forgotten Realms version?

To G Barrelhouse : I think your Grey Box would be just fine. The only 3E book that I can think really added alot lore-wise was Serpeant Kingdoms. Use your 1E boxset as base and add to it what you think sounds cool. If you plan on getting to Waterdeep, you probably can't go wrong with...

Covers Preview for Elemental Evil Adventurer's Handbook and Princes of the Apocalypse!

I think you're right Derren. That reading of the situation makes sense with what WOTC has said and done. Except for the Sundering....which doesn't quite fit that model. But there the disconnect might be due to PR hyperbole. But then there were comments Ed and Bob made that the Realms were...

Covers Preview for Elemental Evil Adventurer's Handbook and Princes of the Apocalypse!

I think it would be great if WOTc released soemthing not tied to their adventure paths. Having such a small number of releases and having all of them keyed to WOTC's adventure hardbacks doesn't give DMs anything if they don't want to run those stories. That's pretty lame and it's not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Forgotten Realms version?

Hey DM, 1489 DR is the current year according to information given by the Adventurer's League (organized play) people. BTW, questions like this are exactly why WOTC needs to get on the ball and give fans some 5E Realms update information.

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks Realms & Sundering

If "hands off" is the 5E approach, why did Ed and Bob say they were excited for the 5E FR and that fans had good stuff coming. Why did they do the Sundering? Because with no follow up it looks a whole lot like the "Fix the Realms" talk was just hype to sell the Sundering books. Which is...

    D&D 5E (2014) What does a Kraken look like?

I don't know what they were thinking but that monster in the 5E Monster Manual is decidedly NOT a Kraken.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E DMG question

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E DMG question

Other than name dropping is there any reason why the 5E DMG puts the Isle of Dread on the Elemental Plane of Water? I don't remember anything in X1 that indicates its on another plane.....did I miss something? :p
