    D&D 5E (2014) Running Old School adventures for 5e

We did a bunch of them when 5e came out and our 4e DM went on deployment. We all took turns as DM, and while a lot of fun, DM'ing an older module takes a different touch than a modern one - some DMs had issues with a number of 5e 'explain this to me with a roll' features - Insight (as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running Old School adventures for 5e

Oh, the EX series...I'd love to see something fun like that again, so many serious adventures these days.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighters: a humble proposal

No, just those two. As for do rogues need them? Eh...it depends on what kind of rogue you have. I think feats really help damage-focused striker-type rogues (since they don't get Fighting Styles). But not getting one isn't going to hurt them in comparison to other classes.

D&D 5E (2014) How many PCs have you had die?

As a DM, I've had 8 PCs die - 7 of them 1st or 2nd level. The only high level player was a 14th level wizard who I crit'ed with a dinsintegrate. I don't allow PCs to die in the game I DM for my son and the neighborhood kids - if I did the body count would be immense. They are less than...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss: Hemeth the Duergar

In our game the kuo-toa were engaged in an inter-clan cold war that had recently turned into a violent civil war after both sides were suddenly supplied with high quality arms and higher level magic. Shushaar tried to stop it, only to find that the entire thing had been instigated and...

Adventures For Children: Writing RPGs For Youngsters

The bad guys are bad is a great rule, as is the converse - the good guys are good. My son and friend's game is all about how they are the heroes. I also don't kill the PCs. They drop unconscious, "knocked out", and roll to "get back in the action" with a 20 - no death saves.

    D&D 5E (2014) Adventures in other eras?

I am running a hexcrawl right now that is actually backwards in time. It's based on Classical Greece about 500BCE and the PCs are seafarers and explorers of the ancient world (putting that History degree to work, yo). The rules work just fine. A fireball is a fireball and diplomacy is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Scaling Low CR NPCs

This is pretty cool. They have all the various classes in the MM, but it'd be cool to see each one set up in a similar CR - a lower level mage or higher level priest, for example.

    Fighter/Rogue/Barb?

Indeed. Remember that Reckless Attack has to be a Str attack, but Sneak Attack only needs a finesse weapon.

    D&D 5E (2014) Other Classic Adventure Remakes?

I'd love to see remakes in the sense of reworked not just converted. I've converted most of my 1e modules already. But fixing some of the egregious dungeon ecology issues, pacing, removing some of the silliness, etc. would be neat, as well as seeing a new perspective on an old adventure as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive skills

That appears to be the difference in our interpretation: I consider the average roll to mean 'the PCs will, on average, eventually get this' and refer to it as "taking 10 or 20", whereas a passive roll is 'do the PCs have to actively roll for this to happen or not?'. My notion of passive vs...

D&D 5E (2014) How might elven societies be different from the norm?

"These boots of elvenkind are are great for sneaking up on enemies." "No, they are to sneak away. They are reinforced to keep us from stubbing our toes and slip resistant as well" "Riiight. I'll take 'em. So, the money...do you want to open that bubble so I can pass it to you, or...?" "No...

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

...as the last physical Official D&D product. Say what you want about 4e, but we played for years without buying a single thing (beyond the DDI account). Character gen, updated (with Errata!) compendiums for every rule, item, monster, and power...if the VTT had taken off, we wouldn't have a...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

I'm gonna guess that, while that is a pretty good analogy, that a multinational corporation is going to avoid anything to do with a loaded subject like religion so as to not raise the ire of paying customers that adheres to either of those faiths or competing ones as well as those that reject...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss: more level 10-15 adventures?

A couple I've played and like: D3 Vault of the Drow and/or Queen of the Demonweb Pits as well as their 3.5 update, Expedition to the Demonweb Pits have some nice Underdark/Drow/Demon stuff. The 3.5 one specifically has a heavy involvement of the Demon Lords. I like the Abyss mini-adventure...

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive skills

I think every skill can be used, mechanically, with a "passive check". I do it all the time as DM. I approach skills in much the same way Ilbranteloth does - it's not so much a passive check as it is using the ability to set the floor. That's all a passive check accomplishes mechanically - do...

D&D 5E (2014) Cool things to do with books

A few cool things to do with this book that I've used before: 1. It's the key to a cipher allowing the player to translate an old magic recipe/map/etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_cipher 2. The book is a phylactery, soul jar, or otherwise imbued with a powerful essence. Maybe even...

D&D 5E (2014) Exploration and Social Interaction Challenges Discussion

This is exactly how I've been dealing with skill checks* I started doing it due to the dearth of Str and Con skills; just making challenges with ability checks instead of skills. Players started asking thanks like "Charisma check...how about I put a little threatening flex and take a stern...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

I miss the world building. I still use Volo's Guides for everything. Waterdeep has been a dozen capital cities... I do NOT miss all the tables. So, so many table.

    D&D 5E (2014) Battlerager Reckless Abandon

That's exactly my take on it. When you choose to use the Reckless Attack feature while raging you gain THP equal to your Con Mod.
