D&D 5E (2014) House Rules that Span Editions

My group has been playing since '02. From 3e to 5e. I joined in '08 when I moved out here. There is a list of them on a whiteboard in the DM's basement. A few are specific to the edition, but they are mostly reactions to the game as it has gone on. The stuff like "no Evil PCs" or "we're...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hexcrawls/wilderness adventures

Our DM needed a break, so I pitched running a small exploration campaign in hexcrawl format to our group. They really liked the idea. Now, I guess I better start prepping it. Everyone says use "Isle of Dread". Problem is we've used Isle of Dread already as an adventure (the central plateau...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mummy Lord Question

That's actually a great way to do it - "Oh, you've removed that curse from yourself, now...Bob, don't pick that back up, I said 'from yourself' you fool" Also seems in line with the DMG's cursed items where cursed items don't show up with identify and remove curse only breaks the attunement...

    D&D 5E (2014) Allowing Strength for Bows--unbalanced?

Eh, I'd just ignore that and assume by "longbow" you mean "longbow with Xlbs draw". The feat presumes you're not out buying Mattel's My First Bow (tm). The lack of "mighty" bows means there's no rule the feat runs contrary to. I don't see a need to mechanically differentiate every weapon...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why ever play a cleric?

I agree. Oh, by "This" you meant my post, not you're response. Ah, well, the English language is fickle. But, no, it's not. I think a request to frame your question correctly (and politely) so we are all on the same page as to what you are asking and want answered is a pretty useful...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why ever play a cleric?

Then here's a crazy idea: Ask it that way. Your thread title and initial responses were not about min/maxing, they asked about a player's personal rationale for playing a class. Then you ignored/dismissed subjective replies as objectively wrong, because...the "EK gets more attacks" or whatever...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why ever play a cleric?

Because I select my class, feats, and other attributes based on the character I want to play and not what's "best". I could care less if I'm leaving .012345 DRP on the table by not taking a class dip plus feat plus loose interpretation of a rule... In general, I don't feel I need to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Cell Phone and Electronic Etiquette at your 5e Table

Generally, we don't have cell phones* at our table. I work for an IT consultant firm and some of my contracts require 24/7 availability. If that's the case, I'll either plan around it by not playing (or go to a movie, or whatever) or let my group know that if the phone goes off with the work...

    D&D 5E (2014) Expedition based adventuring

And to make sure they realize what kind of danger the laborers are in... "Mister please make sure daddy comes home - he's only one expedition away from retiring" "Please keep my baby boy safe. Take him with you everywhere. I've given him his favorite bright red shirt for the trip..."

Easy: "Oi, adventure boy, grab a shovel. You let Roy get eaten, now you can shoulder his load too" says the guy who carries the food.

    D&D 5E (2014) So 5 Intelligence Huh

Lots of stuff people enjoy bothers me - from conversations of "Hodor, hodor, hodor. hodor? hodor!" to auto-tune "songs" to not using turn signals to shooting off fireworks at 3 am on a random week night. I'm not going to stop them, but there's no forced enjoyment symbiosis. As I said, to...

D&D 5E (2014) Where Did Rebuke Undead Go?

Right. Or if the undead is not immune - e.g., skeletons. Sucks to be a skeleton I guess.

D&D 5E (2014) Where Did Rebuke Undead Go?

Necrotic or necromancy in relation to the undead is weird in 5e - example, Chilling Touch does necrotic damage, but actually has more harmful of an effect on undead (go figure...) I always considered Turn and Rebuke the same thing - neither is actually controlling or buffing undead, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Expedition based adventuring

Sounds awesome. I'll echo the importance of entwining the patrons, or at least their motivations, into the overall story. I'd assume they are doing it for more than profit motive - there are cheaper, easier, and safer ways to get rich than spending capital outfitting armed expeditions that may...

    D&D 5E (2014) Was I in the wrong?

It's a 4e thing - a damage boost based on stacking cold damage via feats and items. There was a feat gave the target of your attack vulnerability to cold 5 if you hit it with a power that had the 'cold' keyword (via a frost weapon, class power, or using a magic frozen whetstone on your...

    D&D 5E (2014) So 5 Intelligence Huh

I'd phonetically spell out or mispronounce words. "The why-zards from ta-hay we-are red row-bees"

    D&D 5E (2014) So 5 Intelligence Huh

Oh, Nine Hells, no. "Hodor" would (and already is) get so old, so fast. It's like Apu's description of the B-Sharps; it's something slightly funny at first, that seems less funny each time you hear it. I mean, to each their own...maybe I should add this to the 'dealbreaker' thread

    D&D 5E (2014) Was I in the wrong?

At the tables I play, no phones. Put them away, put them on silent, etc.* I play on Roll20 a lot and you can't stop it, but it's noticeable when someone is multitasking, and is really annoying since it slooooows the game way down. So, I feel ya. With friends or face to face you can socially...
