I don't think you are acknowledging the key gameplay differences between, say, Shadowdark and 4E. Those are not just class and level differences.

Probably, though I do think there is something to the brand power and inertia. Some folks just won't buy or play things that don't say D&D on the cover.

That is already the case -- hence Shadowdark, Daggerheart and Draw Steel (plus others like Nimble and DC20 I guess).

Traditionally we see a lot of experimentation (some might call it "flailing") before a new edition, which I certainly don't think we are seeing with the post-Core Book 2024 releases. Of course we don't know what 2026 holds but my guess is that CR using 2024 is going to bolster those rules and...

Joking aside, I am surprised Hasbro never just bought CR.

I think that is a dial, too. Some campaigns work well with "long rest is a week in a safe environment" while others would benefit from "you get 2 minor recharges and 1 major recharge per session."

I kinda wish @EzekielRaiden and @Zardnaar would read the thread title and OP again.
