D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

In my 20 years of playing D&D, I've yet to see it in person. At minimum the DM let you reroll if you weren't happy with what you rolled. I was typically fond of rolling multiple characters and playing the one with the best stats(with the DM's tacit permission), which kind of defeats the purpose.

Multiclass Vengence Paladin for Curse of Strahd or no?

If I go Paladin 3, in a game ending at level 10 that means only one ABI. Sorc seems like the best choice as it's the only one of those classes that gets all 3(Misty Step, Haste, and Booming Blade) by level 10. Warlock doesn't get Haste, and Bard doesn't get Misty Step at all in the level range...

Multiclass Vengence Paladin for Curse of Strahd or no?

Just joined a table starting out Curse of Strahd, which goes over levels 1-10. I built a Vengence Paladin at level 1, and am kind of torn whether to multiclass into Bard/Warlock/Sorcerer and go for more smites, or to stay in Paladin for Misty Step and Haste. I'm torn.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

You got it pretty close. I would call roleplaying a close second in priority, as opposed to simply a second priority. Any character I play, whatever the concept, whatever the system, ends up good in a fight. Back when I used to play oWoD, I played the most violent Ventrue you've ever...

D&D 5E (2014) Pact of the Blade weapon question

Are mithril and/or adamantine weapons considered magic items? If so, you can turn an existing one into your pact blade. I believe that would be the only way to do it.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Here's my problem. I play TTRPGs to both kick butt and roleplay, or specifically to roleplay buttkickers(Samuel L. Jackson style, for example). If I only wanted to kick butt, I'd play Final Fantasy instead. What makes me want more player control as opposed to DM control isn't so much esoteric...

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

So, use the best of three sets of stats, then when your character dies your dog ate the other 2? Either way, that qualifies as fudging in my book.

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

4d6 strictly enforced, or 4d6 with fudging or cheating?

D&D 5E (2014) Random, balanced, fail proof 5E stat generation system

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, after people online said my 4E stat generation method was too complex even if it was only one sentence. This despite that method going viral among everyone I ever gamed with in real life and everyone they gamed with as well. The method was--use 26 points...

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

I haven't played much 5E yet, and all of the 5E I have played has been point buy, but given all I have read into the system in pursuit of 5E system mastery, for what it's worth I can honestly say that I would flat out refuse to play 5E with randomly generated stats unless there was an...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

There is a fictional trope called "the load", which describes a character in fiction whose main purpose is to be a burden on the other characters. This is, in a way, another type of spotlight hogging. Instead of hogging the spotlight by impacting the fiction in a positive way, you impact the...

D&D 5E (2014) Random, balanced, fail proof 5E stat generation system

It's simpler, but that would kind of require arranging the six stats to taste. I wanted to include rolling the stats in order, and I had to make it a bit more complicated to accommodate that and making sure the stats end up where they need to.

D&D 5E (2014) Random, balanced, fail proof 5E stat generation system

The reason I hate rolling is the disparity between results at the table. It was one of the problems I wanted to solve. That being said, I do agree to an extent with the people who like random generation, particularly with those who advocate rolling in order, about interesting random results...

D&D 5E (2014) Random, balanced, fail proof 5E stat generation system

Sorry about the double(triple) post, but I wanted to address two points I didn't in my previous reply. There is nothing arbitrary about anything in the system I made. Every step has a very specific purpose. That being said, it is a bit complex(it's more complex on paper than it is in practice...

D&D 5E (2014) Random, balanced, fail proof 5E stat generation system

I wouldn't say I'd feel absolutely good about each of those arrays, but the differences between the high and low rolled ones is within what I can tolerate.

D&D 5E (2014) Random, balanced, fail proof 5E stat generation system

It's really not as complicated as it looks. I rolled all 20 of those characters in less than 10 minutes.

D&D 5E (2014) Random, balanced, fail proof 5E stat generation system

After reading the comments in the rolling stats thread, I was inspired to make a system for generating random but fair stats for 5E. I put a first draft of the system into that thread, but have since revised/simplified it. These were my goals: 1. Make it impossible to generate a "bad character"...

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

It also doesn't help that the line between strictly random and random plus cheating/fudging is rarely clear.

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

I Alternatively, if you wanted to roll before choosing a class: 1. Roll Str, Dex, Int, Wis, Cha in order, 4d6 drop lowest, treating any roll below 8 as 8 and any roll of 16-18 as 16 2. If none of these 5 rolls is higher than 14, replace your highest rolled stat with a 16(if there is a tie...

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

This would be my system for semi-random 5E character generation: 1. Choose your class(must be chosen before rolling stats) 2. Put 15 in your the main stat(s) of your class(yes this means Paladins, Monks, and Rangers get 2), main stat for Fighter is Strength 3. Put 14/15 in Constitution...
