    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I don't really see how my dislike of certain aspects of 5E is a problem that needs solving. You seem to be having far more trouble with my dislike of 5E than I, take from that what you will. I'm joining a long term campaign of 5E on Wednesday so it's something that I'll have to deal with. If...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I don't really see the point. I've made myself clear, if you don't understand I don't think I can help you.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Because I want to know how something is going to work in advance, so I can make an informed decision. If I am dealing with codified rules, I can do this. If it depends on DM discretion, I can't know in advance since the DM's mind is hidden from me, and I can't make an informed decison. Now...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

The dispute over #1 isn't over whether or not it's a good thing, but rather that it is true. Whether it's good for the game or not is a matter of opinion. That being said I think your mistaken in that it's necessarily adversarial. From my standpoint, I want to be able to make tactical and...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

The dispute on #1 baffles me, at the very least in comparison to 3E and 4E. It's specifically spelled out in the rules that it is so, and the designers have affirmed as much. To me it just sounds like people being obtuse. As for #2, both 3E and 4E had more overall options at launch, and you got...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I don't see where a greater emphasis on DM discretion compared to earlier editions is up for debate. The designers have specifically said it is so, and it's spelled out in the game books. It's up for debate whether this is a good or bad thing, but I don't see how you could argue that it isn't so.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

    1. I wasn't talking about being selfish/coward as a player, but selfish as a character. Mostly this means avoiding danger, either by being ranged only, disengaging from melee every turn(like a Rogue), or playing a Barbarian or Paladin who attacks the enemy flank of rear instead of head on. It...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

He wanted specific examples, but my issue was a general one, not a specific one. Specific examples would have been irrelevant. Specifically: 1. Too much is left to DM discretion(value neutral translation--5E leaves more to DM discretion than earlier editions) 2. 5E has less player options...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

At high levels, I still think spell-casters are more powerful. Non-spellcasting abilities just don't scale like spells do. My comment in the OP was that Cantrips are weak at early levels and combined with the low number of spell slots casters feel weak by my standards at the beginning of the...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

You responded to my last answer on the subject, so you have read it. As I said, I explained the matter to my satisfaction, and have given up trying to explain it further.

I did answer this, and you either didn't understand or accept the answer, so I gave up trying to explain it

Wasn't really looking for answers. Just thought it was an interesting situation to talk about with other people, and it was.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

The sort of flexibility you describe seems absent from a lot of people in this thread.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I'm not expecting much, honestly. I started this thread to discuss dealing with a system that isn't a really good fit for me and my thoughts on that. I'm not really going to change my approach, as that's just how I play. I'll make the best of it and we'll see what happens.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Problems are inevitable in gaming. What I was trying to say is in my years of playing, my style of play has never been one of them. This may come as a surprise, but most gamers are awkward and inexperienced in social situations, especially the younger ones. They don't argue much when somebody...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I'm not saying everyone is wrong, I'm saying you and a few other close minded people in this thread are wrong. I say this in the hope and belief that most people playing D&D aren't like you. I've been playing since the mid-90s during the 2E era, and my play style is more or less the same now as...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

But I don't believe everyone should like D&D the same way. Those are your words, not mine. I don't see where this has anything to do with D&D. You seem to be claiming that people who powergame and people who don't can't enjoy the same game. I don't agree. It might be true for you, but I see that...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

There's two ways to talk to NPCs, using game mechanics or the old fashioned way, back how we did it in my 2E days. I excel at the second way.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Habit I suppose, is some of it. The rest is failing to understand what people's problem is, or maybe I'm just trying to be optimistic about thinking D&D players are different than what I see in this thread.

You speak of misrepresenting people and then you do just that. It's not that you don't want us to have fun, you just want us to have fun someplace else, possibly playing something other than your game.
