Your game or theirs?

If you're not interested in other people's input, why are you bothering to post here? I'm not trying to be overly harsh, but there are a lot of red flags here. You KNEW ahead of time that your DMing "style" causes problems, but your way of dealing with it was to demand no one question your...

    I'm bored with it all.

Yeah, sounds like you need to take a break from the game. A few folks up there are advising changing up your games, but I would be cautious about that. If the players want a combat heavy, light on role-play game, then they won't appreciate trying to force something else down their...

What was so bad about the Core 2e rules? Why is it the red-headed stepchild of D&D?

Any product, when produced, has a "target audience" - a certain age group for sure, with possible ethnic, gender, and economic background (as well as others). AD&D was targeted for educated adult gamers. The artwork featured full or partial nudity. The writing in the books featured complex...

Just thought I would share this long story with everyone.

First and foremost, your first game should appropriate for first time gamers. Forget that they're women. They're playing the game for the very first time! Keep everything relatively simple. Give them a simple plot and easy to figure out trials. While you're there, try to be as...

    D&D 4E Homebrew setting I'll use for 4e

Then clearly someone will have developed ships that float on the mist... For some reason I'm picturing these to be long and wide and FLAT ... like a giant floating piece of plywood.

What was so bad about the Core 2e rules? Why is it the red-headed stepchild of D&D?

I think you've really hit the nail on the head here. AD&D was written for adults, or at very least people with brains. 2E was seriously dumbed down. It was softer, cuddly, and fluffy. It didn't have that hard edge that AD&D had. There were a few rule changes that were improvements, but...

    Rough numeric comparison 1e-4e

Number of pages is a misleading metric. The 1e books had *tiny* print and very limited artwork. I'm also relatively certain the tables had much less on them and thus took up less space. A more meaningful measure would be word count.

    What do you eat/drink?

Mallus is being nice ... check out his homebrew setting below. It blows away anything I've ever come up with.

    What do you eat/drink?

Thanks. That's never come up. That particular sect is concentrated in a certain geographical region, which the PCs only visited for a couple of game sessions. That would make for some good adventure material: "You notice that Sir Garnfor is staying away from the potatoes...."

    And Things Didn't Work Out...

Well, you've hit the reset button here. You can really do ANYTHING. My guess is that Ameril is probably short on cash and supplies. I would try for something short and simple just to put some money in his pocket. After that, Ameril might recognize someone from back home ... a minor rival...

    What do you eat/drink?

In my game all Elves a lactose intolerant - so their food contains no dairy. They eat with their fingers, or use a special kind of thin sponge-like bread to pick up their food with. Gnomes, on the other hand, have special utensils for each and every food. It's not unusual to come across...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

I came here to say the same. Specifically, I think it was sometime during the era of second edition D&D, when WotC/TSR (whatever they were back then) started printing handbooks for each and every class (The Complete Book of .... ). These pretty much uniformly struck me as useless supplements...

    If you could choose...

I'm thinking ... Beek Gwenders of Croodle, Cloyer Bulse the Magsman, Fonkin Hoddypeak, Gleep Wurp the Eyebiter, and Roaky Swerked With apologies to ... Faffle Dwe'o-mercraeft, Flerd Trantle, Frush O'Suggil, and Redmod Dumple.

teleported PCs to random dungeon - where would you put 'em?

Or ... deposit them in the middle of a Reality TV Show ....

    Why do 4e combats grind?

On of my former DMs used to solve the grind problem by adding creatures to the encounter when combat ran too long. This might sound counter-intuitive, but it works. Suppose the DM realizes around round 6 or 7 that the combat is just going nowhere, or not working to the PCs advantage. He then...

Developing a One-on-One Campaign (stay away SkyOdin)

That can be tricky because you don't know what the player(s) are going to do between now and the time the NPC turns to the dark side. If you're like me, then the campaign isn't planned out more than a few sentences beyond the current adventure either. I think I would just write in my notes...

Milling some idea's around for my campaign

I don't know if this helps, but I personally think the best way to engage your players is to make the adventures personal. If you can latch on to some aspect of one of the characters and build an adventure - even a side trek of some kind - the players will really enjoy it. Does a PC have an...

teleported PCs to random dungeon - where would you put 'em?

That really is the perfect choice. If you don't have access to the adventure (it's an oldie) the PCs are trapped in the deepest part of the dungeon and have to find their way out before the poison gas (the whole dungeon is filled with poison gas) gets them. The gas has some mild but...

Developing a One-on-One Campaign (stay away SkyOdin)

I ran a one-player campaign awhile back. My solution was to do this: a) give the PC a companion or sidekick. A Robin to his Batman. A Tonto to his Lone Ranger. It helps if the sidekick has some healing abilities, but that doesn't mean the sidekick is all healing. b) give the PC some...

Endoar (Eddy/Albert et al, STAY OUT please?)

The name sounds too much like "Endor" ... I expect ewoks all over the place. Or maybe Ewoaks ....
