D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

That's true I've had DM's call anything over 8 high level. For me it's anything over 12. I've had some tell me it's 18 or 29 plus. But it's never really been quantified by any official source. But I'd really rather decide myself than have someone quantify it for me.

Utility spells yes. Anything cast in combat nope. You had to declare your action or spell at beginning of round not on your initiative. One single point of damage and you lost the spell.

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

If you stick to the rules yep. After 12ish the DM has to give up on encounter levels and be able to plan based on what they know their party can actually do. You can't use any of the encounter guidelines after that point. It just becomes almost anime rocket tag. But it can be fun if the DM...

I do think at High levels Characters need to feel like they can do things no one else can. Mythical magic Items special powers being able to call in favors from gods etc can fill that void. I think a lot of high levels games get handicapped by GM's freaking out trying to control everything...

Sounds like it feels like AD&D 1E. Especially the magic part.

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

Now that I'm older and 3rd is an not the new stuff. My groups just want to play. I think this issue was mainly a big thing (in my world at least). Only when the new stuff was coming out. People get excited for new stuff and want the new shiny smell. I understand it. My games have suffered...

You are forgetting one point of damage before your initiative and you lost the spell. Magic using classes in 1e needed all the help they could get

Wow I started with 1e and I don't remember that one. But then I talk to people who never used the surprise rules which made rogues and rangers stealth incredibly useful.

I'd argue it's right to conclude (from my experience anyway), that most DM's adjust on the fly, that it's been going on for as long as DND has existed and that only a small minority on forums ever seem to complain about it. That seems to indicate most players either don't notice, don't care or...

that's an opinion I can respect but I don't see things black and white and different circumstances require different solutions. We just aren't going to agree on where and when to fudge. And that's ok.

thank you for clarifying that so I don't have to argue with you anymore. I simply disagree with you. Good luck in your games.

D&D General Disparity in PC levels from same party

not if the powerlevel trivializes the lower level PC's. In 1E levels weren't a good indication of power level. They were simply markers for each PC. Thus your paladin and Your Mage would be lower level than the rogue and the Warrior but they'd all play together just fine. As long as it works...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

generally the fudging I've seen with DM's has possibly messed up the encounter, or just had a stupidly long string of ridiculous rolls, and I don't want to break thier game, kill the player etc. I think you are in general talking about handwaiving of trivial things which is not the same as...

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

It may be that 2e has more supplements. I don't remember them being particularly problematic for most games Like a lot of the 3.0 supplements. Maybe I"m wrong but 2e seemed to be a lot more tightly monitored, controlled and had better quality stuff released. It wasn't perfect but all the...

that's fine for a one off module. It gets really freaking old in a long ongoing game. Even for me when I'm DM'ing.

nah downtime is when the railroad stations get built. I also find it creates great starting points for the next games after those characters retire.

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

that's true but even people who aren't nuisances get frustrated and fights occur when they buy rule books and are then told they can't use the new "flavor of the month" prestige class, race etc. The lack of control over what they released and how it interacted with the game. (to be fair...

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

see I don't agree the base game was badly designed. I'd argue the lack of control in the splat books and supplements just destroyed the core design. If you are very picky about which supplements you used 3.0 isn't a bad game. If you just use everything it's a freaking swamp.

D&D 3.x 3rd Edition Revisited - Better play with the power of hindsight?

the biggest problem with 3.0 was that the players found cool stuff in splat books that DM's refused to allow and then all hell broke loose. I had 2 groups, and one longtime player during the 3.0 years almost melt down over my refusal to allow things that jsut didn't fit the game or in one...

So you're done with D&D but still want to play D&Dish fantasy...

i suspect the fact that they haven't finished might mean they are discovering that there is no easy way to keep the crunch, balance it and keep the players. A lot of the "fun" stuff in crunchy games is the stuff that is unpredictable and in some scenarios overpowered. PF2e got the balance but...
