D&D General Younger Players Telling Us how Old School Gamers Played

I feel that we are the generational equivalent of the sitcom character that was prominent in the pilot episode, but never was heard from again in the rest of the series. We peaked at Reality Bites.

    D&D 5E (2014) The power of smite

Actually, nevermind. I laid out the damage expected from all four scenarios of misses, hits and crits in my post but I guess people just stopped at the first line and said I'm arguing in bad faith because it's a 1 in 400 chance the paladin does a lot of damage. If people aren't going to...

    D&D 5E (2014) The power of smite

Do the math...and if you are using GWM then redo my math also using GWM. I left out feats.

    D&D 5E (2014) The power of smite

I said in the shield discussion...extreme CharOp builds aren't a good way of determining balance in the system.

    D&D 5E (2014) The power of smite

Spikes in and of themselves can be a problem. If the game works on the assumption PCs are dealing around X damage per round and a character spikes 6X damage in a round it can make an interesting encounter fall flat. Do you think the actual smite spells listed would be balanced if they could be...

    D&D 5E (2014) The power of smite

I think smite would be OK if you declared you were going to use it before you rolled (only spend if you hit) but being able to sit on it until you roll a 20 and then deciding whether or not you want to cash it seems out of line with other abilities classes have.

Is The Forum Getting More Antagonistic?

Replying to more than one post at a time, or doing much more than just Quote then Reply is nigh impossible if one uses a phone browser to engage in the forums. I have about a 1.5"x2" square of visibility on the text I'm wrangling.

I Am Your Father! The Spoiler Spoiler Thread -- What are the biggest ever spoilers? [spoilers]

There never was a tiger in the boat. Or maybe there was. Believe what you want. (Life of Pi) The events of every horror movie happen because of humanities need to sacrifice to Lovecraftian horrors. (Cabin in the Woods) Hitler dies. (Inglorious Bastards) The girl dies. (Me, Earl, and the...

What is the Worst Halloween Candy?

I actually like those and got 10 for 1 when we would do the candy trade at the end of the night.

    Best superhero rogues gallery?

I vote X-Men. I will admit I'm biased as Spiral is my favorite Marvel character.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

That is, again, perhaps showing that shield might be a problem for CharOp groups/builds but not the general game. That's really the divide in this discussion.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

Note: I literally said (typed I guess) in my last sentence for Uncanny dodge it costs a reaction. But overall all I am going to reiterate is that your use cases for shield being overpowered are use cases that are rare at my table. We never play at levels higher than early teens. Wizards...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

Uncanny dodge is way better than shield in my opinion. Shield has a good but not guaranteed chance of stopping one round of attack rolls versus the caster at the cost of a resource and a reaction. Uncanny Dodge is guaranteed to halve damage from any one source of damage once a round for as...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

Wj Why does the wizard have to cast a low level spell? Either they go first and cast a level appropriate spell that kills or incapacitates enemies, or they go after the bad guys and burn a 1st level spell to possibly live long enough to cast the spell they were going to anyway. What has...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

My point is that it's usually a better use of a spell to kill/incapacitate an enemy versus avoiding one round of damage and having to face the same enemy the next round. Fog cloud give the caster multiple rounds of protection but I don't see claims it's also overpowered.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

I've not seen a lot of 10+ level play in 5e. Are there no more powerful options a wizard has for their reaction than shield at higher levels? I would guess it's strongest aspect and it's biggest weakness, is the fact it uses up a reaction.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

I've never felt shield was all that great in 5e. Sure you can be super defensive for a round, but then the next round the enemies are still there and now you are one spell down. A better use of a spell is to prevent the attack in the first place by killing the enemy or keeping the from...
