D&D General Dan Rawson Named New Head Of D&D

How much value is there in comparing the amount of changes in a core set of three books vs. a 10 page document? 3.0 to 3.5 didn't reshuffle the entire spell list from 6-7 piles into 3....but nobody even knows if that's a thing that will stick around longer than a month. It's simply too early...

D&D General Dan Rawson Named New Head Of D&D

Yes, and people also called it 5e during the playtest. Then it actually came out and Next was dropped and 5e became official. You do you, but I'm still not seeing how 6e is derogatory.

D&D General Dan Rawson Named New Head Of D&D

5e and Next were synonymous in much the same way 6e and One are. I really don't see that as rude or dismissive until an official name is locked in.

That's setting a very low bar.

D&D General Replacing 1d20 with 3d6 is nearly pointless

I'm confused. Much virtual ink has been spilled telling me that 3d6 (or 2d10) doesn't do what I think it does. For me that would be to make rare things rarer and average results more common. This is a different point than 3d6 does what you want it to but doubling modifiers does the same thing...

D&D General Replacing 1d20 with 3d6 is nearly pointless

This..plus...there hasn't been much discussion of opposed rolls which is where I feel the single die method feels wrong most often.

D&D General Replacing 1d20 with 3d6 is nearly pointless

I'm partial to an Xd2 binary system (0 or 1 on the die face). I really like it requiring the 1000 dice needed to roll an at-bat in Dynasty League Baseball. J/K but I don't have much to add because I'm missing the point on why a bell curve isn't more predictable.

    D&D 5E (2024) Backward Compatibility

Why do you have to change a 5e bard to play it in the 6e ruleset presented so far? What 6e rule prevents a 5e bard from functioning exactly how a 5e bard is already working in 5e? I think you perhaps are hung up on the idea that a 5e bard needs to be "updated" to play in 6e, but that's not the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Backward Compatibility

Just going to keep saying it. Compatible does not mean identical. You could play a 5e and a 6e bard in the same party...they would just work slightly differently.

    D&D 5E (2024) Backward Compatibility

Compatible is not the same as equal. If you can sit down at a 6e table with a 5e character sheet and play the game it's compatible. Character X having a feat that Character Y doesn't doesn't make it incompatible. You might have an argument about imbalanced, sure, but that's a different topic.

    D&D 5E (2024) (+)One Big Thing I Would Change

My big change would be to go back to having mechanically interesting additions to the game. 5e design is so stagnant that the game today is so similar to when it released that floating ASI is considered a major change.

    D&D 5E (2024) Just drop the backgrounds.

It's not hard to say. Pick a random character sheet from a pile of every character sheet ever made in 5e. Highlight all the things in the sheet tied to class in yellow. Highlight everything from race in blue. Then everything from background in green. The sheet will have more yellow than...

    D&D 5E (2014) I figured out why all 5e ship rules suck

In WEG Star Wars RPG ships that held multiple people (like the Falcon for example) divided up the jobs amongst the crew. In Star Wars for example Han and Luke were shooting different guns, Chewie was piloting, and R2 was doing repair and navigation. 3PO was just in the way. Obiwan wasnt...

    D&D 5E (2014) I figured out why all 5e ship rules suck

It's not reactions, it's that trying to swim upstream against the one-complete-turn-at-a-time generates friction and leads to the "people don't want to learn new rules" issue that (to some) holds back innovative 5e design. I'll refer back to my previous exams of the old WEG Star Wars RPG...

    D&D 5E (2024) Just drop the backgrounds.

When a character dies in a session at our table 9 times out of 10 when we ask the player "What's your next character?" the answer is what class they are going to play. 1 times out of 10 it's a race. Never once has "Folk Hero" or "Sailor" been an answer.

I'd put them in the stat generation section.

    D&D 5E (2014) I figured out why all 5e ship rules suck

Many games have the ships move one at a time...until they all have moved. Then they have them all fire after the movement is complete. This better (but not perfectly) simulates everyone moving at once. Some games even divide the moves into multiple steps so that each ship moves 1/x of it's...

    D&D 5E (2014) I figured out why all 5e ship rules suck

Good observations. Some people might want Sailing Ship Simulator (like for a pirate campaign) involving holds, cargo, trade routes, upkeep, etc. Others might just want Ship Battle Tactics. Good way to do one or both would be to write those as two separate rule sets but have the data...

    D&D 5E (2014) I figured out why all 5e ship rules suck

Nice presentation! I'm at lunch reading on a phone so couldn't really do a proper deep dive on the system, but from what I gather you did a more detailed version of what I usually do when creating custom modules for DnD. I usually try to make a unit (whatever unit means based on the scale of...

D&D 5E (2024) Two long rests PER LEVEL

I get the math and see what you are trying to accomplish, but I feel that using the system results in a jarring narrative experience. I'd never want to tell a player their cleric isnt getting prayers for spells answered until they go out and kill a few more monsters.
