D&D General If not death, then what?

This is a bad look, my friend. Ruining a game by exploiting a rule one doesn't agree with would, indeed, make one a jerk. If one wanted death on the table one could just opt in for any and all character death from the start and not have to play with the safety net that bothered them so much...

Level 1 Gameplay or Progress through Mastery

If you are asking about would I play a game where player skill determines success the answer is yeas and no. Yes, I would play a boardgame that I improved at every time I played it (Gloomhaven is an example). No, I would not play a TTRPG that required player skill to do better. Player skill...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Hypothetical question. If you played in my original 5e campaign (ran from the beginning of the release for about 4 years) for the entire length of the story and never lost a character would you feel slighted that death wasn't an option? Would you feel differently knowing the following...

Best action film series of the last 20 years

The first Kingsmen movie was the best action movie of the last 20 years, but the series itself maybe not.

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

I think you are very reasonable in that you recognize this is a discussion of preference and clearly state thing in the manner of it being how you like to play, versus others in the thread using the language of "It can't work that way because X". The discussion keeps wavering back and forth...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

When I say player authored story I mean the player came up with an idea, the GM worked with it and it became a reality in the campaign world. If player wrote up the story of a cabal of mechani-druids because they wanted to interact with them, then with GM approval and editing the cabal shows up...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Here's the thing with this endless argument. At no point have I claimed that nobody should have character deaths in their game, I have said I mostly avoid them because it messes up my storytelling style. This isnt a dig at other types of play. Its a sime statement about my preference. Which...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

You gave me two examples of people who are unable to collaborate properly to support what argument? That collaborative fiction doesn't work at all?

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Agreed, but the more new characters glom onto old characters theeads the more it feels very artificial. A brother coming in to replace all of a killed characters stories rings false unless that brother was already established in the fiction. The big difficulty is a TPK that sunders almost all...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

And in both of your cases, the story you are talking about comes from the actions in the game. Like "Hey, remember that time your gnome got mad and bullrushed the duregar off the ledge and into the lava pit, forcing the minions to flee? That was awesome!" or "Remember that tower we took from...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

So can we sum the thread up this way? Some people play DnD because they like the mechanical system and want to "beat" challenges in it. They need character death for the challenges to work. Some people play DnD because they want to tell interesting stories. The mechanics of the game are used...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

I'm old (it was my 49th birthday today). Ive played those style of games, but do not find fun or value in them now. I now bounce off the idea of using my knowledge and real world physics as channeled through a surrogate. It's why I despise "puzzles" in adventures like a dirty diaper. I find...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

The rogue was my character. At no time at my table has anything been said about expectations more than "this is harder than normal" for a particular adventure. The adventure the rogue died on wasn't harder than normal, it was just a series of bad rolls on my characters part followed by a good...

    D&D 5E (2014) Create a 5e Psion

I'd build psions as having a series of powers (use controls as a base for the discussion) that scale with psion levels instead of character levels. Powers would have scaling effects as you go up in level, but with wildly different abilities like spells. Psionic Self Heal 1: You automatically...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Id imagine if the players had an old school "Do anything to keep my character alive as long as possible" mindset it would be challenging to kill off a large number of PCs. I never create a character with that as a design goal, so conversely I think I've lost 4 or 5 5e characters as a result...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

This post right here. chef's kiss 100% I do not play an RPG to try to keep my character alive through a series of challenges to see the story that emerges. I have board games for that that do a better job of keeping things interesting for me during the combat. I play RPGs because I want to...

D&D General If not death, then what?

Chiming in to add a bit of data, but not really to add much to the discussion. Yip-Yip the kobold druid had a CON of 10. I never roll for HP so I did indeed have 8+(9*5)=53HP. I was fully healed at the start of the battle and took either 2 or 3 more HP from the spell than I had. The damage...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

How do you know how much damage a monster does in an attack before you have been hit by them? How do I know if it's a d8+2 orc or a 2 attack d12+6 orc before the battle? How do I know the giant undead thing in front of me has 40 or 400 HP until I attack it? Maybe your group uses out of...

D&D General If not death, then what?

Static bonuses are also a little different in 5e versus older editions in that they don't double when you get a crit, but instead only the dice you rolled do. So if James' character normally has 4d6+6 with a sneak attack they would do 8d6+6 on a crit.
