D&D General If not death, then what?

It sounds like in your group the characters dont have an investment in their own goals and ambitions separate from the main plot they share as a party. If you were invested in a subplot or subplots there would be many things you could "lose" besides your life that would set the character back...

D&D General If not death, then what?

A character isnt dead until the GM says they are dead. In your statent you imply that "the world" makes death happen, but "the world" is the GM. If the GM and player doesnt want character death then the character doesn't die...they just suffer whatever fate the GM/player work out as agreeable...

D&D 5E (2014) "When I Run D&D 5E, the Arc of the PCs' Adventures is 'Zero to Hero'." (a poll)

I have enough zero in real life. In my fun time I want to be at minimum a 3 or 4.

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

The only 5e single class fighter at our table was focused on defense and shields instead of damage. But I'm discussing classes in a general sense, not classes that are optimized tondonabcertain thing. A paladin doesn't have to optimize, multi class, use feats, or have any particular stats or...

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

Depends on the bad guys for sure. Undead hoards are generally too stupid to think that tactically (undead hordes being the best use case because of number of targets and radiant damage) but also cornered animals, held or stuck opponents, or dungeon style tight space encounters all get...

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

The true issue with paladins is that they get to wait to see what they rolled in order to decide if they want to smite. I don't have a problem with this idea so they don't lose a charge on a miss, but the (I believe) unintended consequences is they can wait until they crit to get double value...

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

I'm the only person who played a full warlock, and didn't use EB at all. Edit: But you might be mistaking what I was saying . I think the ranged rogue is very steady (in that they rarely deviate up or down from the same general damage range) moreso than most other classes because 99% of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

So, lots of examples of a heroic heros death. Other than for comic relief can anyone think of examples of featured character death that is "random" in that it doesn't impact the story at large? Best I can think of is some Lovecraft stories where people just ... die. If it serves a purpose it...

Or, it just so happens that the character who did die at the end of Act 1 is also the character everyone considers useless...because they died and didn't contribute anymore.

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

I'd say the ranged rogue had the most steady damage in my game. They very rarely missed, almost always got sneak attack, but with only one attack a round rarely overshadowed the GWM paladin who on a crit/smite would just delete opponents.

D&D 5E (2014) Which characters are the DPR (damage per round) leaders at your table(s)?

Paladin. Then about 5 blank spaces. Then a pretty close tie between the rest of the classes except sorcerer/wizard/bard who are at the bottom of the pile. Spirit guardians is like an ongoing relentless fireball. I don't know how a wizard could match it in damage.

Morganti weapons is a staple in all my campaigns because that series deals well with the idea death is only suffered by the poor.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e isn't a Golden Age of D&D Lorewise, it's Silver at best.

Perhaps a wiki saying everything that ever happened from 5000 sources is not the best way to introduce a setting? Maybe they could make some sort of setting guide with a nice map and general overview of the state of the world as it is currently? Then as you explore you have a solid base to...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Questions for zero character death players and DMs…

Death has a big place in stories about PCs, but not so much random death (unless the player wants it). My example earlier was a shield being disintegrated. This was a thing that happened in my 3e campaign. A player, due to a string of bad luck, found his dwarven fighter sent from full health...

Torg literally has a "Martyr" card that lets you kill off your character to achieve almost anything in return. The Jedi in your story was channeling that beautifully.

Would LotR have been a better story if Pippin was killed by the barrow wight, Merry on Weathertop, Sam to the cave troll, and the Frodo dies to Shelob? Was it a better story that they were saved by interesting interactions with other people or items? No or mostly no death probably doesn't work...

Serpent Kingdoms was the best hyper focused FR 3e supplement. This opinion brought to you by the letter "My favorite bad guys are yuan-ti".

D&D 5E (2014) Invisible, hidden and within 5 feet of an enemy making a ranged attack

If you want to get technical, the rule doesn't say the hostile standing next to you has to do anything at all, coming up with something is fun and all but not required for the RAW folks? Technically a wizard can teleport his invisible toad familiar at the feet of the archer and the archer would...
