Stranger Things 4 - Any good?

I had the same A and B but not C result for myself. I think the reason it's not obvious is that the person doesn't seem to be anywhere near old enough in their adult form. By my math they should have been pushing 40 when we last saw them and the person playing them did not look anywhere near that.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Explain RPG theory without using jargon

I feel like every time I start to get things straight a new post comes along and it upsets the applecart. Your 4 steps listed here are exactly how one of my gaming sessions goes and I am playing 5e. Why then is my game not narrativist?

D&D General Should The Pcs kill A Succubuss that's around 1,600 years old, which is The Succubus equivalent of A very smart 9 month old Baby?, or should they not?

PCs should do whatever the players decide they should do. I'm guessing English is not your first language? The word should is maybe not the word to describe what you are trying to ask about. Also, 9 month old babies really aren't mature enough to have "adult style" thoughts and memories...

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

The adventure (as in prewritten thing) is written in a way that each step of progression leads to one and only one next step. Location 1: PCs acquire a key and a map. Location 2: Locked door only opened by key from 1 opens to a mine. Mine is an ambush and PCs are captured. Location 3: The...

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

So my kicker deep dive has divided into two lengthy posts by two different helpful individuals. Since I am on my phone for most EnWorld discussion it's hard to be fancy with replies. I'm going to take the easy route for me and merge the two posts into a singular answer. From both of your...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Batman, Torg Eternity, Exalted, and more

I think the biggest issue with US is that they purposefully bury their updates in their web videos. I shouldn't have to rely on other funders to watch the content and tell me the update in a comment on the CF Page. If there is news it should be posted as an update to the campaign.

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

I appreciate the very long example. I'm really not being arumentative about anything, just trying to understand. If I had, at my table, a 4e game with a skill check that happened exactly as you described....but the only difference was I played around in the medium range of DCs (say the 10-14...

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

This has already been talked about. 1. I'm in the audience of this thread. I am included in the target audience of any general statement made here. 2. I have never heard the word kicker as defined in this thread until today. To me kicker is something added to sweeten a deal. 3. The...

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

Is it only a kicker if it's resolved as soon as its laid down? Game session 3 GM: As you round the bend you are startled by several ravens cawing loudly in the mide of the road. Player: (inspiration to add to backstory) Barnabus backs up terrified. He is irrationally afraid of loud ravens...

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

Gonna quote this as an example of words that have no meaning to the layman. None of this means anything to me, your audience. To do as I've been asked....can you please define for me Purist-for-system Process/Simulationist Play (Not even sure is this is one or two separate things)

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

Without wider context I struggle to see any significance to someone inventing a term as shorthand for the concept of backstory the GM incorporates in the ongoing fiction.

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

So is kicker just shorthand for "The GM is obliged to honour, build on, place pressure on and riff off a player authored inciting incidents"?

D&D General RPG Theory and D&D...and that WotC Survey

I super sympathize with this post. My enlightenment came around the psion era when no more base classes seems to have hardened into a design principle.

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

As an exercise to illustrate jargon from a specific game using confusing generalsit terms....I'm going to write a question you might find discussion about in Enworld... Help! In my game the scenes are too short and I feel like my adventures are moving too fast. ...now picture in your head how...

Why Jargon is Bad, and Some Modern Resources for RPG Theory

So, on your climbing equivalent of Enworld board, is there some sort of subgroup that takes a word like ascent (that 90% of the board assumes to mean going up) and repurpose it to mean something else? Because thats what's being talked about by "jargon" inost of these cases...reusing a standard...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Explain RPG theory without using jargon

I will steal any idea from anywhere and cram it into my games. I've combined a fiascoesque system to create a WW2 squads interpersonal relationships, used the rules from Call of Cthulu as a framework, and had a one off adventure that was a series of shades of grey moral choices by the players...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Explain RPG theory without using jargon

You say it's obvious The Story (tm) is different than the generic grade school definition of story...but it really isnt. Whenever I refer to my games story it's simply "what happened/is happening/will happen" as per the simple definition. I would never think it meant anything else.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Explain RPG theory without using jargon

Heck yes....this was much more relatable. I don't have time to read the whole thing right now but going to hit it up at lunch tomorrow. I got as far as to see my major sticking point with the theory (you can't mix the streams) but I'm interested to see all that the author has to say. Thank...
