D&D General As of 1998, 4,007,685 people played AD&D in the US, as estimated by Ben Riggs.

Poppycock. I was introduced to D&D by my cousin Steve. I was in Denver over the weekend for his wedding, and he confirmed that he was never contacted by Ben Riggs as part of his research. So the ACTUAL number should be AT LEAST 4,007,686…

Recommendations for an FLGS in Boulder, CO?

I had a chance to briefly check out B&R on my way into Boulder on Saturday. It is exactly as amazing as you all say. Fortunately, I will have time for a much longer visit tomorrow, as I head home. UN-fortunately, tomorrow’s visit is likely to leave a pretty big dent in my bank balance.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do ability scores cap at 20 instead of 18?

    1) 18 is more fun than 20. 2) A d20 roll caps at 20 (before modifiers). Your level caps at 20. So ability scores having a cap at 20 is synergy. It doubles down on the brand.

Spelljammer Meet The Giff--Spelljammer's Space Pirate Hippos!

I rolled up a Giff Forge Cleric / Artificer for a campaign that starts on Sunday. Does this make me a trend-setter?

    D&D 5E (2014) Invisibility

I would rule that the item becomes invisible. Unless the player specifically asks that it remain visible for shenanigans. (Shenanigans should always trump RAW) A few months ago, I had a similar experience when my Arcane Trickster cast Mage Hand. The party was in a tavern when a brawl broke out...

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeons and Dragons cartoon characters on the new starter set and in the D&D movie, does that mean anything?

It’s probably a wink and a nod for longtime fans. Or something the writers stuck in for their own amusement. Similar to how Guardians of the Galaxy had a cameo by Howard the Duck. Now, if the movie opens and social media blows up with comments from people who want to see the cartoon characters...

Recommendations for an FLGS in Boulder, CO?

(Mods: If you feel this is the wrong forum for this post, feel free to move) I will be spending a few days in the Boulder area, and it looks like I will have a bit of downtime to explore a couple of gaming stores while I’m there. In particular, I am looking for a store that has a good...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

(Yoda voice) A lawyer, I am not… but how can you claim that something is “private information” when you were offering it for sale on your website (even if it’s not clear that any copies were actually sold that way) AND you were handling it out as a freebie at a convention? I mean… I suppose...

D&D 5E (2014) How long since the last official D&D hardcover you last bought?

I don’t always keep up with the books as as soon as they come out. I’ll sometimes hold off to see what the reviews are, or wait for a price drop. My last purchases were Fizban’s and Strixhaven, back in October. Since then, I was gifted Monsters of the Multiverse (so, not a purchase). I also...

D&D 5E (2014) Journeys into the Radiant Citadel shows up in the wild!

I have not read the book, so I will just assume it’s a demon who went to law school for a semester and then dropped out. He never took a class on contracts, so he can’t go all the way Lawful Evil. This is my headcanon now. Shut up.

    D&D 5E (2014) Toll the Chest

This suggests a new tactic to avoid being surprised by mimics: Have the wizard cast an illusion causing the room to look like an ornate, lavishly-furnished throne room. The mimic, indistinguishable from a merely “ordinary” chest, is now distinctly out of place—it is therefore noticeable and...

Spelljammer Check Out These Spelljammer Ships!

I mean… I’m not even a Spelljammer fan (I had stopped playing when the setting came out), but everything you just described sounds like fun. In fact, our DM just pitched an idea for a future campaign: “Nautical theme, the party gets its own ship, hunting pirates (or maybe you ARE the pirates.”...

D&D in the 80s, Fads, and the Satanic Panic

Interesting. In my circle, pretty much everyone had the PHB and the DMG (and very often one of the Monster books). Part of that was due to the fact that we periodically rotated DM duties… but I think the bigger factor was a desire to have all the rules. No secret, DM-only knowledge for us...

D&D General Did You "Return" because of some Edition of D&D?

After playing B/X and 1st Edition from 1982 to 1989, I stopped playing RPGs altogether. Partly because I didn’t feel like re-buying rulebooks for 2nd Edition, but mostly because my gaming group scattered to the winds when we hit college. Fast-forward to 2014, when I started seeing articles...

    D&D 5E (2014) Backup Healz

Lots of classes have access to Cure Wounds and/or Healing Word: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Paladin, Ranger (and Artificer, I think). So a one-level in any of those classes by any PC gives the party a secondary healer. That’s useful if the Cleric is down, or too far away to help. The Healer feat is...

D&D 5E (2014) Best way to deal with greedy players and magic items in a fun game.

Only drop attunement items, so that the greedy player can’t Gollum them all.
