    D&D 5E (2024) I have the DMG. AMA!

Love this, and like that it's still open to the idea that if you fall out of your gods favor, you may need to go to another god to continue getting gifts (leveling up). At least, it's ambiguous enough that a DM could rule either way I think. I've always run Warlocks that way, and will now...

D&D General What house-rules or techniques do you use to make 5e grittier?

I really like that Con check for a long rest concept! It's simple, fair and evocative, and feels like it would really add to the tension of a long rest. Mind sharing the DCs you've come up with for the enviornment/lifestyles?

    D&D 5E (2024) I have the DMG. AMA!

Got my DMG from my FLGS this morn, and just want to quickly say that the DM Toolbox and Lore Glossaries are fantastic. Easily worth the $50 just for those sections. The toolbox especially feels like it's going to get a ton of use when I'm planning adventures and scrambling to react to player...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

So far, the only thing I've found related to how many rests to provide is in the Scaling Lethality section of the DM's Toolbox. The advice is basically to use High difficulty encounters w/o the opportunity to rest for a more lethal experience or Low difficulty encounters with plenty of...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Right, which is why there are guidelines for Low and Moderate encounters as well. The point is, if you want to run a single encounter day and have it be a challenge, there now appears to be a guideline to get you there. I know a lot of groups who like to default to a single encounter per day...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I think that's the point. Hard encounters are now meant to be used for single combat encounter days.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yes, which can be balanced (if the players even care about that) by varying the adventure day from day to day. Every day need not be the same. Also, the short/long rest divide between classes is much smaller in 2024 PCs.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

To be fair, the encounter I built was about 10% over the new Deadly guideline in XP and the dice were not in the PCs favor in the first couple of rounds. It was just over double the 2014 Deadly encounter rules. Also should have mentioned that this was the only encounter of the adventuring day...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Just got my DMG from my FLGS and quickly checked my Level 20 encounter from the end of my last campaign. That was a near TPK with 5 experienced players with a well balanced, well optomized and equiped party of 5 (a TPK was prevented by a super clutch Nat20 Death Save by the party's cleric)...

D&D 5E (2014) Run DnDBeyond “encounters” inside the Maps vtt!

I've been waiting for this since I switched over to Maps from Roll20! It wasn't terrible switching between tabs, but this is going to be much better. Spent 10 minutes playing around with it, and while there are def some rough edges around the UX (I need to be able to add conditions effecting...

    D&D General Sigil codes

Agreed. It's not at a Minecraft level of easy UX, but it feels like it will get close to that by the time it's fully polished. If they make the dungeon builder a satisfying experience in it's own right, there could be an absolute explosion of user created content for DMs to pull from as people...

    D&D General Sigil codes

@Zaukrie did you get codes for the Alpha release? I'm in the Alpha playtest already and got an October changelog today, but still for the Alpha.

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Masters Guide Adventures WotC live stream

Okay, so the new 'Moderate' which used to be 'Hard' calls out that without healing and other resources, it could be a challenge, where as the new 'Difficult' should be a challenge even with full resources. Also interesting that above level 10, they are increasing encounter difficulty from...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Agree with all of this and this is my experience DMing as well. And none of that requires a WotC defined Adventuring Day with a set number of encounters to achieve, hence the change in the discussion to pacing. The pace will change based on a lot of factors. The only downside is that a DM...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I made the comparison to highlight the fact that player decisions about risk/reward drive the decision to long rest. As you mentioned, there is rarely consequence for long resting as much as you want in BG3 (if you have the resources) and yet when I played, I constantly pushed an adventuring...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yes, it's still important that the DM pace things out, but that will vary by group and situation by their risk/reward calculation. For example, in BG3, my wife likes to long rest after just about every encounter that she can rest after, whereas I like to push it as far as I can between long...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

So if I had to guess, the reason that the adventuring day guidelines were removed from the DMG is because WotC realized that it's not DMs who determine the length of the adventuring day, it's the PCs. Depending on their personal taste for risk against the rewards being offered to continue, PCs...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Don't know if it's set up this way, but what would really be helpful is if it was broken down like this Hard - A challenge for PCs at near full resources, potentially deadly if at half or below Medium - A challenge for PCs at half resources, potentially deadly if at low Easy - A challenge for...

    D&D 5E (2024) Real Character Generation in 2024 PHB

This is so spot on. Like, the Stealth/Hide/Invisible Condition rules are so well done for 95%+ of situations that new players will run into, and completely easy for an experienced DM to rule in a way that makes sense in a specific situation. I agree that there is purpose behind the designers...

User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

My username dates back to my early 80s arcade days, with their 3 character limit for high scores. Instead of my full initials 'ONB' I added in my love of Star Wars to become OB1 (sometimes OBI if I couldn't choose numericals).
