Hidden Treasure from The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons

Got my copy last night and am 100 or so pages in. Just incredible. I'd never red the Chainmail or ODD rules before, so a lot of the book is brand new to me and just absolutely fascinating in the way it captures the evolution of the game, the time period and the brilliant nerds who created it.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: "New Rogue"

    That soulknife art is amazing!

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Agreed, two feats to choose from would have been nice as well. Also hit me that we probably won't see combos of Dex/Con/Cha, Dex/Con/Wis and Dex/Con/Int in the 16 backgrounds. I get the sense that a few stat/feat combos are so good at 1st level that they would have quickly become default. It...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

While I get why they moved custom backgrounds to the DMG (for ease of onboarding new players by providing some inspiration and guidance), I'll definitely be making custom backgrounds the default for my games, adding to my list of house rules from UA changes that didn't make it into the final...

    D&D 5E (2024) Let's call it 5.24

I'm just calling it D&D. The only time it will mater to me to distinguish is pre session zero, as I explain to my players that they can build PCs using either the 2014 or 2024 PHB and that if they choose the 2014 they can only use it and the two guides to everything for character building...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Map Of D&D's Planes!

Love the style and most of the iconography with this map. Think there is room for a few more details to help distinguish the uniqueness of a few of the planes, but it's really a quibble. More importantly, I'd guess this is much more evocotive to a brand new player learning about the planes...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #3: "New Paladin"

As someone who's played quite a few 5e Paladins, the switch of Lay on Hands, other smites becoming reactions to a hit, and other options to bonus actions is well worth what I'm giving up by also having smite become a bonus action. I've greatly increased my flexibility in combat, for example...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #2: "New Fighter"

I thought you would be able to re-roll all the damage dice for a single effect (like 8d6 for fireball), but according to the summary above, it only allows you to reroll a single damage die which makes it a pretty bad use of inspiration. I'm going to house rule that you can use it to re-roll all...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #2: "New Fighter"

I called it wrong on Heroic Inspiration allowing players to reroll all of their damage dice. Looks like I've got my first house rule!

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #1: "Everything You Need To Know!"

They weren't explicit about it, but the example was rolling 'a bunch' of 1s on a fireball, and made it sound like you wouldn't just re-roll one die.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #1: "Everything You Need To Know!"

Being able to reroll 8d6 for a fireball when your first roll totaled 20 is pretty powerful. Could easily result in another 20-30 total damage being done.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #1: "Everything You Need To Know!"

Ignoring the pedantic debate over if this is 'backwards compatible', 'new edition', 'new half-edition', and just want to say this is EXACTLY what I wanted out of the 2024 PHB. It's ultimately a way to create a new character that is still fully compatible with every adventure and source book...

    D&D 5E (2014) New Monster Manual Cover

Thanks for the lineup pic @rules.mechanic ! That just sold me on the 3 alt covers. Absolutely stunning together. The real choice I'll have to make is if I'm gonna also buy all 3 standard covers for day to day use, so I can keep these in pristine condition.

    D&D 5E (2014) New Monster Manual Cover

I think having a Beholder front and center on the MM is a far better choice than a dragon. It's one of the most unique monsters in the D&D menagerie, and one that a brand new player isn't likely to have seen before, selling the idea that the MM is chock full of new things.

Oh, yeah def need Xenk to come back for a cameo as well. Got the name mixed up with Lillis (who was also great).

D&D Movie/TV Paramount+ Will Not Proceed with Dungeons & Dragons Live-Action TV Show

Agree that Page steals the show and that's why I would make sure to include her in the sequel. An easy storyline would have Pine and Rodriguez captured by the Thayens, and the story follows her, Simon and Bug as they travel across Faerun to rescue them. Have it end with them getting to Thay...

D&D Movie/TV Paramount+ Will Not Proceed with Dungeons & Dragons Live-Action TV Show

It doesn't come as a shock to me that the TV series didn't make it out of development, the vast majority of planned series don't. One of the big issues Marvel faces is that when you 100% commit to a show and a release date going forward before a pilot is shot is that what sounds like a good...

D&D 5E (2024) New Dungeon Master's Guide Cover Features Venger (From the D&D Cartoons)

Oh man I LOVE the alt cover. Gonna be a hard choice as I can't justify 2 DMGs the way I can 2 PHBs.

    D&D 5E (2014) Running 5e at high Levels

As a general rule, I've found you can throw 150% CR solo at a party and they'll figure out a way to succeed (solo can include some cannon fodder at 50%CR. So For level 17 you'd be looking at topping out at CR25 with 6-8 minions at CR 8. You can also run one monster for each PC at 80-90%CR...
