Good question Darrin, and I wish I had a good answer. I can and will stumble through an answer as to how I get that feeling, but can't obviously comment on how others are.
I started AD&D as a DM. And I've pretty much worn the DM Hat since 1978. I enjoy playing, but I enjoy DMing.
In 1E, I...
I'm a turmoil of conflicting emotions. Seriously. I agree with the above quote by Paws, and I'm a huge fan of a Dark Age theme within D&D. 4e has left that paradigm and gone with a more, um, fantastical setting.
And yet, 4e to me seems much closer to 1e than 3e. I think we'd agree 1e was about...
True enough.
WotC has to hope (I'd say 'we' have to hope, but I bet you'd disagree with me ;) ) that they are able to keep enough - not all - of old players and bring in enough new blood to kickstart this hobby again.
I agree with Pramas on the driving, irrefutable need for new gamers. That...
Anyone find the amusing irony in the fact that 4e gets some grief for being too complicated, and then gets some grief (often from the same folks) for being too simple?
Yep, yep - I knew you did.

I actually think that's a fantastic idea. Not all minions, certainly, but it couldn't hurt to make a couple minions into super-minions per this advice. Would it change the encounter much? Probably not.
But it would, I dare say, help combat player metagaming when it comes to minion vs...
True, of course. The only thing I would add is the 4e seems to make those periods of bad luck more, how do I say, manageable.
Mathematically I think this stems from the fact that monsters in 4e hit more (again, just using my limited play experience) but damage less, on average, than their 3e...
And that, Sir Mouse, is why you get paid the big bucks. Very good idea. Taken a cue from Seraph's post, I think I may design a generic "run away!" skill challenge, easily (?) adaptable to various situations wherein our brave heroes are universally happy they're faster than the dwarf.

Not trying to threadcrap here, but the competitive advantage I saw for DDi (based upon the previews) was the use of 3D virtual minis. Now that I understand WotC plans to charge extra for those, I believe DDi's game table just jumped into a level playing field with the pre-existing online tools...
Interesting. "Retreat" is not a word, I believe, in my group's pre-4e vocabulary.
Would be sorta nice to see an article on how to handle retreats without getting bogged down in an ever-scrolling battle mat. I suppose you could use the "reference point" the DMG suggests when discussing aerial...
Anyone else notice this? A "standard" encounter in 4e, per the RAW, seems much more difficult than a "standard" encounter in 3e, per the RAW. Evidence is anecdotal only; no math here.
And if you up it a couple notches in 4e, PCs start dropping left and right. I was worried about 4e during the...
I agree - that type of costing is the worst possible move/ploy WotC could make. There should be one cost to enter the park, not a cost-per-ride in addition to the gate cost. Embarassingly stupid.
Scott Rouse, if you're listening, I'm generally pro-everything you guys do, but this would be an...
Went through a nearly identical process wherein I, too, had a dungeon planned for my group that was designed under the auspices of 3e.
Merric, do you remember that nifty leading WotC article during the lead-up to the launch? I forget who wrote it, and I can't locate the link, but it basically...
Yah, I'm seeing the irony in posting a thread that's purpose is to usher out the days of those very types of threads.
So, ah, if anyone has the Power, feel free to lock, delete, move, or otherwise kick this thing to the curb.

OK, I added Papa's two questions/quotes to my OP when he said he was being as equally snarky as me. Hopefully that makes it more of an even request, instead of some veiled attempt to continue the war.

You won't find me, as far as I can recall, saying a bad thing about either of those systems. It's like talking about an ex-girlfriend - nothing good can come of it, and few folks really care.
So, I guess I'm saying - Yes. An emphatic yes. I will let those who choose to play different systems do...
