Storybased Dungeon Exploration - No Map Required?

Fellas: My nerd mind was in full swing the other day and I was considering shifting from a tactical movement-based dungeon exploration mode to a story-based one. My group uses minis and a battle map for fights because they're inherently tactical and we like that, but I'm starting to think that...

1E and 4E are similar? Really? (Forked from: 1E Resurgence?)

Agreed. Nicely put Henry/Grim. 4E has a much closer 1E feel than 3E. That doesn't make it objectively better, or worse.* And if you don't feel that way, it doesn't mean that those who do are wrong.* I for one am happy to see the resurgence of 1E discussions stemming from these...

    1E Resurgence?

Because you want more of it? Because you like the imitation but might really like the real thing? Because 4e kicked on the nostalgia nozzle and therefore you'd like to live a little in the past? Because you miss your days of playing in your buddy's parents' basement? Because you liked...

    Kobold Quarterly #7

I think they have, praise be to the Old One. I suppose it's just the natural cycle: change happens, people complain about change, change becomes the norm, people find something else to complain about. You watch. In a year or so, there'll be a huge fracas on here about what 5E should and will...

Amazon Sales Rankings - amazing data!

Ahh...so there's a timer, of sorts, to that data? It's not kept from the first unit sold until present? That would make sense. Though it also makes me wonder how Castle Greyhawk shows up. I bet Merric only searched for that module because of his deep-seated hatred of it. WP

Amazon Sales Rankings - amazing data!

Why is that 'amazing data', Sir Merric? Or were you being humorous? I guess one part that seems very "off" to me is that the latest supplement (AV) is out-selling the core rules. Makes me scratch my head as to how that can be. If 4e is, as those in the know state, a smashing sales...

    1E Resurgence?

I agree with your friend. The ease of DMing, the freeform rules, and the relative elegant simplicity of the game all create a "1E feel" within a 4e game. Much more than could ever be captured in 3e. 3e, to be fair, was certainly closer to 1e in terms of sacred cows and familiar terms. If one...

Is there an "Age" factor to choice of editions?

Wow. Please pretend I said this exact same thing, though I realize it'd be the one time I made a post that actually was succinct and yet elegant. I'm the same age as you, with the same age breakdown in my (two) groups. WizarDru, you rule. WP

Presidential Election Politics and What Turned Me Off From 4e

decisions within gaming have become, of late, as emotional as decisions in politics. man is an emotional creature. the bandwagon hysteria evident in US political machinations is similar to the same goofy stuff in this whole 4e vs. The World thing that's going on. does that mean people make...

Top 10 EN World Facts...er, Opinions

If one judges the success of a product based upon how well it sells in the marketplace, 4E is a rampant success. As for its longevity…time, of course, will tell. You cannot simultaneously fix the flaws of 3E while maintaining the revised game’s backward compatibility. You can do one, or the...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

How so? Ahh...you have some amplifying information for me: Wrong, unfortunately. No company decides they want to intentionally lose money. 1% or 4% or 9& or whatever percent. It just doesn't happen, silly. Now, now - they may make decisions to increase their revenues with the understanding...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

Just chiming in that I'm an old 1E (started 1983) and have been playing since then, some times less than I would like. I skipped 2E (but still played 1E) and then was recharged when 3E came out. Loved it. A part of me still does. 4E hit, and I've moved forward and onward once again. My two...

Going back to 3.5... Any ideas to 4e-ify it?

Wow. This thread is chock-full with good ideas. Thanks for starting it Rem. Since folks gave better answers than I could to each of your bullets, I'll just comment on the last one: How to inject 4e "feel" into your 3e game. I think the "feel" aspect that's most appealing in 4e is the dynamic...

Curious about something: would you play in an AD&D campaign?

A one-shot? Abso-friggin-lutely. A campaign? Nah. Simon - Why not look at C&C? Close to 1E without all the clunkiness. Certainly a better option than 3.0/3.5, IMO. WP

Do ability scores modify saves/attacks when creating monsters?

Thanks. Love the ability to tweak. What I've found myself doing is really mucking withe defenses, in particular. I don't like the fact that, with most MM entries, the Defenses are all within 1-2 of each other. I'd much rather have a "weak spot" and a stronger one to balance it out.

Do ability scores modify saves/attacks when creating monsters?

I'm sorry if I'm missing something, but I just can't figure this one out. In the DMG, we have a table showing what defenses, attacks, etc. a certain monster should have (based largely on level and role). All well in good. In the text, the DMG discusses how ability scores modify these numbers...
