    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

Personally, I think people would pick every part of them to shreds. A5e and TotV (especially TotV) get a pass because they are NOT WotC.

Yup. The decades before being bought by WotC. TSR did it and they made a lot of other questionable decisions as well. But WotC has never nor do any 3pps.

At best they will give some lip service to DMs discussing with their players what options are available during session zero. Kinda like they are now. Rhetorical question: does any major 3pp company make books that specifically exclude options from their other books? Like a Pathfinder book that...

They sell 4-5 books per year with PC options scattered in them. This year alone they are selling two PC centered books (FRPG and FotA). You really think they are going to create a setting that says "artificers don't exist here, you can safely avoid buying Forge of the Artificer"?

By course a new sea, I think he would want WotC to abandon 50 years of IP that he cares about and create all new stuff he can ignore. Start from scratch.

Again, I'm not asking why DMs would want highly curated, hyper specific settings work limited species, classes and monster, I'm saying WOTC has no reason to nurture that because limited options don't sell splat books. They may give some lip service to DMs customizing their world, but they are...

Why would they ever do that? WotC wants you to buy books with PC options. That's why they put Everything books and PC options in monster books. They are never going to say "The Greyhawk setting only has X, Y, and Z" options because then everyone who runs it says "cool, I don't have to ever buy...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

They have put soft bans on species before in Ravnica, Theros and Dragonlance, they can do so here. I don't think they will ban classes though: even adding the psion to the mix, there is only 15 classes in the official game and I don't think they want to constrain that. No setting has yet removed...

I just don't want "here is 6th edition. It's a completely different game with a few D&D specific elements added on." I'm kinda over reinventing the whole system and if all they do is 2024/ToV level revising of 5e, I'm content. Quit reinventing the wheel

But I thought deliberately weakening yourself makes you more heroic? (Sarcasm) I agree though with your point.

You're loss. I was introducing a topic and trying to define a word that wasn't going to have a commonly used definition, but I can't make you listen.

While I agree they chickened out during 2024, I would still prefer 6e to be "let's redesign the fighter class from the ground up to improve combat" rather than "hey, we should make all classes play like PF2e" levels of changes.

Let me discuss a little thing called aesthetics. Ever look at things that are clearly D&D inspired but not actually D&D? I'm not talking any games, but merchandise or memes that references the game indirectly (a baby romper with an 18 Charisma score, a 9 panel meme about coffee alignment, or a...

I think it might be an interesting thread to ask "designing 6e: what things from 5e do you keep?"

Yes, exactly. (And forgive me for mixing up my Shadow games. Find another words guys!)

In a broad sense, yes. Truth be told, I'm tired of new editions vaguely resembling the one before. 2e to 3e was a necessary break, but 3 to 4 to 5 has felt like whiplash. I want 6e to be a much more edited version of 5e which isn't afraid to make the major changes 2024 hinted at before...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Part of Dark Sun's allure is that it gives the middle finger to D&D and it's assumptions. Getting Dark Sun to remember it's a part of D&D and not a special sandflake was always going to be the biggest challenge.n

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I've heard that the designers wanted to use the 1e assassin class (redone for 2e) and it was denied, so they redesigned the bard to be an assassin as a way to get around TSRs mandate. But that's apocryphal.

Whereas I think 5x's engine is a great basis and would rather they steal elements from other games (for example, the arcane/divine/primal/other spell lists that PF and ToV have and we almost had in 2024) rather than look at another system and say "how can we D&D this up?"
