D&D 5E (2024) Next issue of Game Informer will have details on the two upcoming Forgotten Realms books

Absolutely. Many Arrows presented an amazing opportunity: an orc nation that was organized, capable and wanting peace. The other nations didn't know how to react (is it legit, is it a trap?) and even the orcs themselves were divided between wanting to settle down and act like other species or...

D&D General The Purple Dragon Knights are tied to an Amethyst Dragon (confirmed)

Yeah. Sorry. Not here for it. I'm sick and tired of lore purists screaming bloody murder if you dare change anything. I like Keith Baker's take. He never says what is the canon or correct answer. He says "In my Eberron" to imply his is not the only version of the setting that matters. His...

Sigh... Go read the rest of the exchange between me and Scribe. I'm not in the mood to explain it yet again...

D&D General The Purple Dragon Knights are tied to an Amethyst Dragon (confirmed)

I'm not asking for my take to be official. I'm asking it be given the same respect as the official. Which you have failed to do. Official means nothing except as a baseline. It has no greater legitimacy than yours or my takes. And the community needs to get it though their skulls that things...

D&D General The Purple Dragon Knights are tied to an Amethyst Dragon (confirmed)

Exactly. Ravenloft is another good example. Per the old cannon, no one survived the events of I6 (or it's 2e remake). No matter what your PCs did, the cannon answer was always that they died by Strahd. How depressing to know that if you want to be accurate to the lore, you cannot win I6. I...

D&D General The Purple Dragon Knights are tied to an Amethyst Dragon (confirmed)

I assume you have never argued with a cannon purist who tried to correct you with "ackshually..." When your discussing your campaign. You're doing it right now. You're literally claiming my version of Drizzt is wrong. That's why "official = correct" needs to die in a fire.

And I never did either. All I said was my version isn't invalid, wrong or somehow lesser because I did. It's a shot across the bow to those who claim I'm doing it wrong for not following the cannon. There is room in the D&D Multiverse for multiple takes on the same setting.

To be fair, doing your own thing is one of the driving spirits of D&D.

The default is just that: default. It itself means nothing because nothing remains the default once play has begun. TSR used to try to have one correct "cannon" version of events and it ruined gameplay because it shackles the DM and players into events playing out a certain way. Lord Neverember...

D&D General The Purple Dragon Knights are tied to an Amethyst Dragon (confirmed)

My point is that if you sit down to my table and that group discovers people are being murdered by a dark elf with two scimitars, you don't have the right to declare my game invalid because "that's not who Drizzt is, you're not playing the REAL Forgotten Realms!" My version is a as valid as the...

1501 per the new book. Azoun died 130 years ago. That's a half-dozen human generations ago.

MY game, MY Realms. Or do you believe that only the one in the WotC book is One True Realms and no one should deviate from it?

D&D General The Purple Dragon Knights are tied to an Amethyst Dragon (confirmed)

I actually agree. Which is why I prefer the "multiple variants of the same world, each shaped by the DM and players, but all theoretically connected on some grand cosmic scale" system. That way, there is no wrong answer, only multiple right ones.

I think it also was done to foster a certain shared "community" aspect to D&D. Most players can tell stories about facing Strahd or saving Waterdeep and this is D&D's way of saying "all of those stories are valid." It also explains why Metaplot is a dying element of world building (because it...

D&D General The Purple Dragon Knights are tied to an Amethyst Dragon (confirmed)

Its a little more nuanced than that. WotC has used the multiverse to explain that there are multiple versions of Toril or Eberron, but those multiple versions are yours and mine. My version of the Faerun is going to be different than yours, but if I ever take the PC I used in your version and...

Purple Dragon Knight Retooled as Banneret in D&D's Heroes of Faerun Book

I've been harsh on it so far, but we haven't seen what the higher level abilities are. It might still be good, but the level 3 abilities don't fill me with hope. Not when compared to my pet dragon. But in the larger picture, you are absolutely right: we are getting the lore change but we aren't...
