D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

You can say that all you want, but it has connected for me over my long gaming history. I don't know how it's a difficult premise to connect: hide rolls = a greater chance of fudging. open rolls = less chance of fudging.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

I can't speak for others, but we loved the story behind the half-elf in all editions. The old Tolkien story was moving. This was especially true when we were young boys who always felt like outcasts (much as young boys are prone to do). The same was true for the half-orc. Even in our last...

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

Exactly. Why does it matter if they are hidden? The question to that is which DM do they prefer: the beer-buzzed or caffeine-buzzed DM? :) I'll admit the latter is cooler. That is an argument I definitely think you'd win. It does help separate you from the players and does really well in...

D&D General World Building and Magic

I've definitely done it, but not with D&D. D&D is too much of a hodgepodge to actively try to roleplay such scenarios, with the exception of a small, isolated locale. Religion is the same way; with hundreds of deities, why does anyone care that you worship Helm or Heironeous, or Hera? I mean...

    D&D 5E (2024) 3,000 Player's Handbooks Available At Gen Con

Amen. A very small amount. I remember the line for The Witcher RPG book, I can't imagine what this is going to look like. Anyone know what part of the main square they'll be selling these?

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

While I agree with this premise, they also don't know the guard's bonus. On top of that, if you wanted to roll without players eyeing the die, just roll close to you. I mean, are your players actively trying to look at your rolls? Again, I agree with the premise. Some dice rolls are better...

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

:) Fair enough. I understand your point. But what "thing" are you hiding from the players? Could you give me an example please? Thank you.

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

GMs? I agree. There are some games where specific and commonly used information is needed. Rolemaster is an example of this. (Although why it can't lay flat is beyond me.) DMs? No. There is nothing a DM (especially 5e) needs to have on a screen in front of them. The only exception is if they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Pitching the Reboot

    You are probably correct.

I can already see they are not necessarily aligning the PHB with the Greyhawk setting. Dragonborne? I mean, I know players like them, myself included, but they don't belong there. Culturally different/significant humans would be better.

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

No. I find it disingenuous. If I have built an encounter, and the group runs through it, so be it. If I built an encounter and the group nearly dies, so be it. I always err on the side of caution when building an encounter and try to add more things that are interesting than deadly. But the last...

    D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Pitching the Reboot

I really like the idea of @Snarf Zagyg message of not slavishly recreating and learning from the old setting to make it different from other settings. My two coppers would be: Lean in on the politics. I say this for two reasons. One, so each nation can be a little more xenophobic than modern...

D&D General What Races/Species do you think are missing from Dungeons and Dragons?

That's a big question. Missing species that haven't made it in yet: Stars, similar to will-o-wisps. Pulling in other races from different planets like Klingon, Vulcan, etc. Any food-based race, similar what one would see on a 2-year-old's television show; ie a talking potato, cucumber, etc...

D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

And that is fair. I keep saying, we'll have to wait and see. So I will go by that.

D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

I mean, just adding up the numbers to 69 or 106 takes time. And for those non-calculator brains, it takes time. Each person I play with has someone sitting near them that can do the math in their head pretty quickly - and it still takes time. Let alone telling someone you do 6d8 but then you get...

D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

I think this is nice in concept, and definitely your experience. But from my experience, it is the opposite. There are many experienced players that still don't know the game. There are many players that go to do something, then it's explained it's more detrimental than positive, and then they...

D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

I think it will definitely be worthwhile for some tables. For others, not so much.

D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

They seem fun, and in my experience, this will work out fine. The only thing that brings me caution is the amount of time it will take for combat. I can already tell it will take longer, and that is not an improvement for our table.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I agree. Your second point is spot on. Of course, if we go down that rabbit hole, then it might turn into, "What is the wizards unique enemy type? What is the sorcerer's unique enemy type?" Again, I like the thought though, just trying to play a small devil's advocate.
