    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I think this touches on a great point. People envision the ranger, or any martial class, as doing something heroic at higher levels. Trekking across a dangerous desert or exploring some ancient ruins in a forest are par for the course for our ranger - at least that is what we envision. But when...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I agree, judging authors that work in the present is much more difficult. We believe we understand the context of these authors, but there is a strong chance we don't. Today's standards also bring up the complexities of "how much" we know about an author, and whether or not that information...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

If you decide to study an author, the time they wrote (also its reaction to previous times), and what they wrote, it inevitably puts their work into context. In that, a great many conclusions can be made, some explicit and others implicit. The meaning of an author's work can be explicitly stated...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Both of your points are clear and taken. Thank you for explaining it clearly.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

This is nothing but facts. Unfortunately, it is myopic in its viewpoint. You can make the best damage output that way. But again, this a game with trade-offs. It is not a "problem" that one build does more damage than the other, if the other has something they prefer as a player, such as more...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I did. Eight levels of fighter, four levels of barbarian, and four levels of cleric. The multi-class pieces were purely for RP story reasons, but I can tell you the eight levels of fighter (Champion), with the class ability Two-Weapon Fighting and the feat Dual Wielder (AC bump and longswords)...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Fair enough. But from your first post, it really sounds like you are just asking for more. And you are correct, healing word is a spell, not a class ability. I was just using it as an example, albeit a poor one. Thanks for clarifying the position.

D&D General Weekend Fun: What Fantasy Movie Does Your Ideal D&D Campaign Look Most Like?

In my opinion, Honor Among Thieves. It had world building, but it seemed kind of loose, with many of the sights and backgrounds not explained. I mean, I get them because I have read 1000s of pages of lore and books, but from a 2-hour movie standpoint, it seemed like just a fair job.

D&D General One Piece of Art X: The Weird Art

This was one piece of gonzo art that definitely expanded my D&D horizons. I just remember thinking when I was 13: "What if you killed it and could use its eyes like a flashlight!" :)

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Of course you would. All players would. The cleric would rather have their bonus action and still be able to heal someone, just a few less HP. The two-weapon fighter would rather have their bonus action and just do a few points less damage. The thief would rather have their bonus action and only...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I'm sorry, but that makes zero sense (to me). It's the game designer's job to balance the game, or at least try to balance it in feel. Why would that go away with multi-classing?

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

The ranger casting without verbal components (or somatic) is an old idea. The difficulty with bringing it up as a problem right now is - we don't know how it may interact with other class abilities. And since everyone likes to complain (or cheer) about the min/max multi-class combination, then...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Once we play this ranger in a long campaign, then we can judge.

D&D General Weekend Fun: What Fantasy Movie Does Your Ideal D&D Campaign Look Most Like?

LotR (Jackson), Conan (Arnold), Pirates (especially movie 1), Big Trouble (gotta love Jack Burton), and Honor Among Thieves. These are all classic D&D style adventures. Each has a classic big-bad (Sauron, Falsa Dum, Barbossa, and Sofina). Each had great protagonists (Frodo, Conan, Sparrow, Jack...

D&D 5E (2014) Players, would you play in a multi-year campaign that used only the 5.1 SRD?

I ran one last summer. Only the PHB - that's it. I also only used the MM. It is amazing how many things I dug up, and the players dug up, that we found entertaining. And for the record, the restriction came because we were levelling each session, and we only had ten sessions to complete the...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I agree, we are all selective in regard to verisimilitude. I think the lengthy discussions arise when a large group is selective about the same thing, and another group deems it as unimportant. Tasha's new racial ASIs made that very clear, as did the cantina debate. Here, it is not individual...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I agree with your hypothesis. All my tables are in person, and in person is often (unless you get that one person ;)) more aware of other people's reactions.

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

It's interesting because in in my experience, sex has only entered the plot (for jokes, action, or love) when the table knows each other well. I would find it odd a table that doesn't know each other well does this. But for friends that have played for a year or two or three or twenty, it seems...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

That's funny. And true. A different way to look at it is a person goes through twelve years of school. They learn a lot, but all they talk about are the classes they had with the mean teacher that did disgusting things. The other hundred teachers and the multitudes they learned diminish with...
