    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

IME, players who like/want to deliver a charismatic delivery don't need incentive. They're doing it because they like doing it, it's part of the fun of the game for them. I'm glad for them to do this, but I won't let it overly compensate if they chose to take a low charisma character. Their...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

My Friday night group is like this. I swear I've seen some of the players start shaking from withdrawal if it goes too long between combats. And I totally get it, they're coming down from high stress, mostly very talk heavy jobs and sometimes they just want to hit something.

AI is the new buzz term companies are hoping to profit from. My thought? If true AI was in all the things the marketers are telling us it's in? That would be kind of terrifying. Of course, the truly terrifying thing for me currently - the high amount people seem to be WILLING to push onto AI -...

By extension then, you wouldn't let someone who can't pick a lock or scale a wall play a rogue? Someone who can't properly swing a longsword play a fighter? And, of course, if the player can't properly perform the gesture for magic missile - wizard is right out!

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Sure, but shouldn't the fact that the player invested in a high CHA and the social skills to match also matter? The DM and other players shouldn't just be "cutting that player some slack..." there should be actual requirements to do so. And not just initially, but while the player is playing...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

What about the shy player who has no "real life" charisma or social acumen wanting to play the dashing and socially gifted bard? Does that player have any less right to want to (and be able to) play that character than the player who can't even bench the bar without any weights on it gets to...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I certainly understand Roleplaying being smart - sure. But how do you roleplay problem solving, without any system/dice assistance? Lets say I introduce a puzzle that requires knowing how to manipulate an advanced mathematics formula (I wouldn't, for various reasons but let's say I do). The...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Yes, exactly. However, while just about all DMs (IME) have no problem separating the physical attributes of the player from those of their character, way too many can't seem to separate the mental attributes (INT, WIS, CHA) and expect the player to be charming, intelligent, etc. as opposed to...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Yes, but it's not like non-level based games don't have progression. Your GURPS character gets "better" as does just about any other system. But, from what I've seen, the Level based systems tend to have people more wanting to keep going.

I've experimented with the "legal" AIs pushed by the two biggest players in the industry. "Not good..." Is a massive understatement. They may get there, but right now? Not even close.

Yeah, I think social media (and WoTCs initial wholly lackluster approach to it) hurt 4e a lot. It would be even more extreme now. In today's environment, WoTC works be raked over the coals and I think the "there's no such thing as bad publicity..." (Supposed) aphorism would be thoroughly tested.

Especially with cars, the problem is "best" means completely different things to different people. To some best means fastest, to some most luxurious, to others it means safest -and many, many other "bests." you're not going to find a car that could possibly hit all those buttons. You have...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

There is, of course, a bit of a chicken and egg issue. But, I'll agree with @tetrasodium , people stick with level based games more/longer - even when new to the hobby.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Perhaps, but I suspect not. This is a tangent but (and an opinion): Correct me if I'm wrong, but none of the systems you listed are level based. I strongly believe (and am certainly not the first to do so) one of the driving forces behind the huge success of D&D was/is the level system. As...

And yet, as 4e showed, it is not enough. But when 5e changed the rules back to be more in line with prior editions - the numbers came surging back and better than ever. Yes, I am aware there were many factors involved, but the fact still stands.

In my experience, if you eliminate death saves, 5e suddenly becomes extraordinarily deadly. If you slow down healing/rest rules this would be even more so. That's assuming you even want to do so, I've found challenging players doesn't really require this.

    D&D 5E (2014) Xanthian pun-spells

I remembered liking the books as a kid. Reread the first three relatively recently. They DO NOT hold up. Specifically Anthony has some very, very problematic views re: women. And if you read the later books, or some of his other works you realize he REALLY has problematic views on men and...

You can add me to that list as well. I've played MANY other RPGs, quite a few on a consistent, even campaign basis. I'd still rate 5e as my favorite. Does that mean I don't want to play or run other RPGs? Not at all, my group takes detours into Gamma World, various Savage Worlds games, did...
