I really like the adventure collections offered from WoTC recently. Not all the adventures are great, or even good, but there are quite a few real winners and since they're so plug and play, you can just use the ones that work for you.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. My initial interest in this wasn't anywhere near that deep. More just that Rule 0, has always been completely DM centric, whereas this new version is fully group focused. And that's certainly, well, new.

2024 has introduced quite a few instances of casting spells without using slots, so yes, this change seems 100% intentional.

Well, the perils of courting mega corporationdom. But, I don't know. I took a look at Phandelver and Below, and while I HATED the direction they went, I certainly wouldn't call it bland.

Except for Eldritch Knights, fighters don't (with the odd feat as an exception). Plus the whole immune/resistant to non-magic weapons was a bit too binary IMO.

Have you looked at Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel? Not all of the adventures are everyone's cup of tea but they are certainly not "generic kitchen sink stuff..." Most of them are really flavorful and quite different.

If you're in a group using D&D beyond (and the DM has a master tier subscription) then, assuming they bought the digital books, all players in the campaign get access to them for no cost. Not a comfort if you prefer the physical books, but still a great deal.

One of my players HATES tracking stuff and was initially complaining about weapon masteries. He's playing a Berserker Barbarian with a Battle Axe (and has the mastery so has the Topple feature). By the end of the first session, he was grinning ear to ear - you'd have to pry weapon masteries...

IMO the 2024 rules fix any issues I've had with the Barbarian, especially the Frenzy barbarian. The Monk also seems like a new class and much better, really looking forward to seeing it past level 4.

Rather that a 1 off roll off, have you considered running this as a skill challenge? Something like, the Dragon makes a series of perception checks - you note the results, that is the difficulty for a given check. The players then pick a skill that they think might be useful to the situation...
