D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

So I agree with much of what you have been saying on player input etc. But I think this is a bit much. What people are saying is not that they CANNOT make it work, but that they do not wish to make it work, because it is not their preference.

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your Experience Like with '24?

Possibly, but as a general trend, people with negative comments are MUCH more likely to air their thoughts than those who are ok with or happy with something. So the fact that commentary has been overall positive is encouraging.

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your Experience Like with '24?

Released 2024 monsters. For example 2014 quasit: Damage Resistances Cold, Fire, Lightning; Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing from Nonmagical Attacks 2024 quasit: Damage Resistances Cold, Fire, Lightning Edit: And some circumstantial evidence. Monks attacks upgrade to force damage, all...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your Experience Like with '24?

Will be interesting to see exactly what they did since we know resistance to nonmagical weapon damage is gone.

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your Experience Like with '24?

Only 2 sessions with the new rules so far. Barbarians seem MUCH better. Cleric combat healing was improved (as clearly intended). Sorcerer seems improved as well.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I'm really curious, What exactly did the player think was going to happen here (assuming you ever found out)? Did they just think you'd be so impressed by the gambit that you'd give him the answer?

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

So here's a question, that's related, but hopefully a new direction. Your world is very well established. And from what you've said, many of the players have had prior campaigns in the same world. What's your stance on players using prior character knowledge? As in, the player, being...

D&D General Session Zero and Nobody Chose a Spellcaster

I haven't seen it in play yet, but the 2024 version is a near total redesign. And by the looks of it, a MASSIVE improvement.

It's also worse for the future Eldritch Knight. The 2024 version has some nice improvements!

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Yes, punishing for unexpected play is the worst. That said, my example was a bit worse than the typical quantum ogre, Because the DM actually telegraphed a supposed difference. Usually with the quantum ogre, the PCs don't have the information. Say they see a left door and a right door and...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Subverting player choice is when the players are presented with what looks like a choice, but the DM actually only has one specific way everything will play out. One easy example. The DM presents the players with supposed different routes to get somewhere. He telegraphs that one is the easier...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I have no problem with linear have seen that many, many people like or even prefer linear adventures. And if you've seen any of my past posts on the subject, then you'll see I heartily agree that the term railroad is thrown around much too easily. But if a DM is subverting player choice...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Exactly, and those exceptions are likely to organically come up during play, especially on an extended campaign. And this is likely to come up in your style of DMing or a different style. The problem I would have is with a DM that actively squashes those exceptions because "that's not the type...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragon Dilemma - Opinions? Advice? All are welcome!

IME players will tend to surprise you, especially when their backs are against the wall. Just make sure you allow any reasonable escape plan, and I bet their odds are better than you think. That said if the worst happens, well then the players have a really cool TPK by dragon story. Maybe even...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragon Dilemma - Opinions? Advice? All are welcome!

The new Planescape adventure has them waking up at 3rd level. Gotta roll with the 5e times, not those mean 2e ones!

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

D&D does not have rules for this, no. But it is highly likely that as the party rises in level they will pile up both obligations and favors from small and powerful alike. By the time they get to TRULY high level a one time "get out of x free..." chit of some sort isn't all that unlikely.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Well, that's why I said mentor and not god. But this could absolutely happen (with a god)in a high power (or maybe even lower) campaign. Baddies manipulate the group (which has been shown to or worse flaunting) their connection to some god, into calling the god. Baddies then use a prepared...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

One thing about threads like this - positions become polarized and extremes are taken/assumed. At the table, A DM who insists on the standard D&D play loop, but is permissive about it and works with/for the interest/fun of the players and a DM who allows a degree of narrative fill-in from the...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Certainly see your point, but there are usually good ways to ensure powerful allies don't become a big crutch. One good one (though since I generally have the same players, I've only been able to pull this off once) is when the players ask the powerful mentor to solve their problem, but the...

D&D 5E (2024) Complete Divine Power: Cleric Domain Tier List

Warding flair is decent but not nearly as good as shield, except you can use it to protect others. 1. Unlike Shield, you must declare before you know if the attack hit, meaning it can be wasted. 2. It only works against one attack, so gets much less useful at mid-higher levels. Interestingly...
