D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Was this codified anywhere? The recent WoTC adventures (the Planescape and Spelljammer ones come to mind) have advancement at 1 level per 1-2 sessions - Much faster than this pace.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Starting at high level has it's own issues. My online group kept asking to try high level (when I joined group was 5-6th and hadn't ever done higher then that), DM didn't want to do it, so I ran a multi session 15+ level adventure. I offered either they could make their own character or I'll...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

One big change for monsters, especially high CR monsters, their + to initiative is MUCH higher - with 2xproficiency +Dex being a thing. With the nerfing of surprise, this SHOULD mean more monsters get to at least go down swinging. @ECMO3 were you able to track at all how often your group went...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Yeah, I'm fine with Min-Maxing, powegaming etc. as long as it's not stepping on other's toes. But dice fudging (hard to prove online if not using online dice roller) and other cheating behavior? That's not going to fly, especially as it almost always comes at the expense of the others at the table.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

What does "by any means" entail? If it means creating as powerful characters as possible and looking for every advantage, well then ok, all long as the player isn't stepping on other players toes. If it means fudging dice, illegal character combinations, ability usage and/or misrepresentations...

D&D 5E (2024) Campaigns, Stress Tests 2024 Impressions So Far

It took me a moment to realize thar it now works against undead and then bigger the "directly harmful" language has been removed - so can command someone to move through a wall of fire for example. That is pretty big!

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

I usually run my own campaign, but lately I've run both the Spelljammer adventure and the Planescape adventure. In both, the great majority of the time, the group gets to long rest after 1 sometimes 2 encounters. This greatly favors the casters because they can unleash their high level, often...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

Yeah, that's a good approach. I've found it helps keep players engaged. Whereas, answering "you don't know.." too often tends to cause frustration and disengagement at the table (as players start to think asking questions isn't going to get them anywhere).

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

I really gotta wonder why you spend so much time engaging on topics about a game you clearly don't like very much?

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I haven't seen much Multiclass abuse. But, what I have seen, came when campaigns started at higher levels (generally 5+), then you can get the benefits without actually having to play to that level.

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Class Rankings (from nat1gaming.com) for ppl who believe that stuff.

Let's add to this that in 5.24 resistance/immunity to weapon damage is all but gone - even lycanthropes and golems don't have it. So fighters will be able to reliably hit stuff regardless of magic weapons, etc. Magic resistance, legendary resistance, and resistance/immunity to various elements...

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Though it's 1 suggestion which could potentially last up to 24 hours. So any extra suggestions are another casting. If they're willing to sit still (Yes, if you suggested them to do so, then sure but that's 2 high level spells and a lot of time). Regardless, Simulacrum has ALWAYS been busted...

Critical Role To Wrap Up Third Campaign, New Exandria Unlimited Miniseries Announced

Personally, my favorite of all the campaigns was campaign 1. The maps were hand drawn, the rules knowledge by most of the players was spotty at best (Though Mercer was generally spot on) - but it was just brought with such fresh faced and fun energy. There was a blip in the first series of...

D&D 5E (2024) Magical effects in the MM

Looking at the 2 (Legacy and 2024) stat blocks side by side - the Legacy one says "On a failed save, the creature magically begins to turn to stone and is restrained." The 2024 one says "First Failure: The target has the Restrained condition and repeats the save at the end of its next turn if...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

I wonder if conjure minor elementals is involved - the 2024 version is over the top when upcast. For example, if it was up when the fight started (duration is 10 minutes so easily could be) and upcast to say, 7th level - that's 8d8 extra - per attack.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Will have to see how that plays out. That said, if the point of giving the monsters higher initiative was to add some more challenge to fights - having that negated by 1 uncommon magic item (among the whole party), is pretty silly.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Giving every member of the party an effective +5 (what advantage is roughly worth) on initiative is pretty big no matter how you do it! I can think of any number of recent combats where the situation would have changed drastically if that had been present.

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Well, the 2014 version made the entire party immune to surprise - which while ridiculous was somewhat niche. The 2024 version makes the party immune to surprise in the 2024 rules (by negating the disadvantage to initiative, the only effect of 2024 surprise) but provides a very non-niche benefit...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Oh I don't know, there were a lot of valuable insights provided by the OP: Viscous weapons punch well above their rarity and the DM needs to think about allowing them. Allowing both purchase and crafting or even either, in the middle of a published adventure can be problematic for the...

D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Yeah, there are some uncommon items that punch WAY above their level. Such as a weapon of warning - which (2024) gives advantage on initiative to all allies within 30 feet and also essentially acts as a sentry, waking up any allies if there is a fight breaking out. You only need 1 in the party...
