D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

If you do this you get something functional but still wonky. That's a lot better than non-functional, but you get the issue of higher-complexity challenges now being both easier and more rewarding. It's a pretty good idea if you just have to fix the problem now, but some people think that the...

    What's broken/overpowered? What's weak?

The "this damage" in this case is that of using a maul (2d6) over a greatsword (1d10).

Save and You're Dead! ... Soon

'eh, it's the same if you have 85/202 HP left. Getting hit knocks you to 0, him missing knocks you to -16.

    What's broken/overpowered? What's weak?

So if you're not perceptive enough to describe him as a frickin' skeleton accurately (I mean, really...) he decides that you aren't worthy of his sword or life! and kills you. I see... ;)

    What's broken/overpowered? What's weak?

How in the Sam Hill do you expect me to compare the power of two races in a game where essentially all of the rules are focused entirely on killing things and taking their stuff and not focus on how good those races are at killing things and taking things' stuff? You'll notice that I did not...

    What's broken/overpowered? What's weak?

I'll try for half-elves. POINT 1: Half-elves have a lame stat bonus. Constitution and Charisma are only found together at all for Warlocks. Compare Dragonborn, who have Strength and Charisma, giving them the primary attribute plus another used attribute for Clerics, Paladins, and Warlords...

    Greatsword is dead!

They could, but your choice of weapon determines what powers you can use and also conveniently weapon-specific powers are like 90% of the ones which require a stat other than Strength. (Wisdom is only useful for Fighters in that it adds to their attack rolls for opportunity attacks.) I...

    Core Handbook Errors Discussion

It has a maximum range of 5 instead of 20 and is sustained as a standard action rather than a minor action. If you just want to run around invisible for scouting purposes, they're basically equal.

    Monster names?

I don't remember "magmen" - I'm guessing it's a derivative of "magma", and that makes me wince - but really, all of those except that and darkmantles are far and away better than Earthrage Battlebriars. My problem isn't quite with a lack of imagination, it's that the name is soul-killingly bad...

    Monster names?

Gotta be a tossup between the Crushgrip Constrictor, Legion Devil Legionnaire, Earthrage Battlebriar, and Sorrowsworn Soulripper for worst name, honestly.

    Core Handbook Errors Discussion

There are no PC Azers in the MM and the PHB table lists plenty of races (mind flayers, kuo-toa, fomorians, efreets, archons, elementals, angels, devils, gods, demons, sahuagin) which are definitely not for PC consumption already. So it seems to just be an error.

"My hat of flight noes know limits"

Seriously, people. Cloud Chariot. Cleric 22. Fly 8 for your entire party, no cost, effectively no duration limit, never goes away unless you want it to, no silly height caps. Why Phantom Steed is so terrible I'm not quite sure but since you need to be level 28 and pay 50k GP to use...

Never Say The Fans Don't Matter

Before I start, what's up with you and Capitalizing words which you are pulling out of a Textbook? I can't refute it for the tier-specific ring rules because honestly I can't think of any good mechanical reason for it to have been implemented in the first place, though its legacy somewhat...

The dudes had pretty much the same situation in 3.5e, only their blowguns were also flutes in 3.5e and they could play the flutes without a mouth due to a dark pact they had made. Without those details, though, and since they explicitly don't have the ability to play wind instruments any more...

    D&D 4E I have 4e but there's a catch...

I love Exalted's official PDFs for this because White Wolf still can't be arsed to use proper tables of contents or any indices at all, but ctrl-F is an awesome substitute. D&D has always had much better organization, but it's an amazingly welcome feature nonetheless.

Never Say The Fans Don't Matter

Pfft. I fully believe that, at some point, they intended to make 4e much more tied to an official "the world of Dungeons and Dragons" setting than it is as of the final release. They wouldn't have spent nearly as much time - heck, it made it into print preview books that they sold for money - as...

"My hat of flight noes know limits"

They didn't, though the "for five minutes" flight starts at level 10 and is the maximum pretty much everyone gets. Look to Cloud Chariot, Cleric Utility 22, for all your permanent overland flight needs, or Flying Carpets (lv20 Wondrous Items) for nerf-tastic but permanent flight.
