Help me nail down this 'take 10, take 20' nonsense

One of my long-time frustrations with D&D 3.0/3.5 is the 'Take 10, Take 20' rule. Although it isn't the rule itself, so much as the ambiguity with which it is presented. One thing I really admired about D20 Modern, and was disappointed to see left out of D&D 3.5, was that for each skill we are...

    Counter Collection Digital - Wow!

I love Fiery Dragon counters, but I hate the digital idea. It seems to me that to make it equal the quality of the cardboard packs, you'd have to have access to a color laser printer and print on cardstock. Not for me. 'Course, I still miss Intellivision. ;)

Why did TSR release Basic D&D?

Hmmm...are you suggesting that the old school OD&D types tended to prefer the Moldvay/Cook Basic/Expert game over the Advanced D&D game? Even though Gygax clearly designed the Advanced game for the die-hard gamer? Not trying to be argumentative, just genuinely curious. :)

Why did TSR release Basic D&D?

I was reading a fairly detailed "history of D&D" on the net recently, and something struck me as odd. We know that OD&D was, of course, the first game, and that Gygax envisioned Advanced D&D as a development of OD&D. What, then, was the purpose of the Basic D&D game? As I think everyone knows...

How about Moldvay/Cook for rules-lite goodness?

Back in 1980 I played the Moldvay/Cook Basic/Expert D&D. Then, like every other middle school kid, I gravitated to Advanced D&D, because, well, "Advanced" sounded cooler than "Basic." :p So lately I'm wondering about a return to Moldvay/Cook, perhaps even trying to use it in a Planescape or...

Is the new Basic Game the "rules lite" D&D we've been waiting for?

Eh? Gygax was involved with C&C? I hadn't heard that. To what extent was he involved?

    D20 Past Cover Posted!

And apparently (according to the amazon link) it's a 96-page softcover? Yech.

Is the new Basic Game the "rules lite" D&D we've been waiting for?

It did indeed. Thanks for the link, brother. The answer to my question seems to be NO. :\ I like to *start* games at 2nd or 3rd level...this set won't do. One thing that hasn't been addressed by that review, though, is character generation. The review *implies* that the basic game has no...

    D20 Past Cover Posted!

I must admit, it *does* look quite cool. But I'm afraid my excitement over d20 Modern dried up a long time ago. D20 Future was the nail in the coffin for me. :\

Is the new Basic Game the "rules lite" D&D we've been waiting for?

So I've seen it sitting there on the shelf, calling to me. The new D&D "Basic Game". Can anyone comment on it? Anyone have it? Is this the new "rules lite" D&D I've been longing for? Please, don't speak to me of Castles & Crusades! ;) I want the *real thing*, baby. Some specific...

I just GMed my 3 year old for the first time!

Heh heh...Dora the Explorah is the latest thing with the kiddies. My 2-year-old loves Dora, Elmo, Barney, and Calliou. And, as I'm learning, it doesn't matter what *I* might think of them. ;) At least she doesn't care for the Teletubbies...brrrr....

But Dragonlance is pretty much dead on the vine, isn't it?

20th level before his 20th birthday

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the problem of different races and their respective differences in longevity. Consider this: A human reaches adulthood at age 15; an elf at age 110. Until that time, both are more or less children. For the next 50 years they both train and adventure...

20th level before his 20th birthday

Not to mention soaking in a hot bath after every battle and complaining about how stiff his muscles are. But then in comes a saucy wench to loosen him up . . . :]

20th level before his 20th birthday

Precisely. When Mozart was 12, he wrote a full-scale opera. What level was he? When Mozart was 30, and was easily the greatest composer in history by that time, he would certainly have been epic-level in D&D terms. I have no problem with my PCs being Mozarts.

    Dungeon 117

Geography. Although Greyhawk adventures are usually relatively easy to plunk into another setting, they *do* take place within a fixed geographical area. If an adventure is set in the Barrier Peaks, then although it may be a relatively generic adventure, it is *still* a Greyhawk adventure...

    Dungeon 117

Hear hear! I think DUNGEON is doing a super job of supporting Greyhawk. Eberron doesn't interest me, but it is obviously getting more than enough support. One look around the 'net will show you that pretty much *all* campaign settings are well supported, either by The Man or by fans...

    Dungeon 117

Sure. Such as magic trains, magic airships, magic robots (warforged), and cities of skyscrapers. Nothing against Eberron...I think it's actually a cool concept, although it's not my cup of tea...but it is definitely not *standard* D&D fantasy, nor was it intended to be.

Hello, all. Quick question from a newcomer: Is Dungeon #117 the first of the Greyhawk-maps series?
