Is hard sci-fi really appropriate as a rpg genre?

You've just summed up why I hate hard sci-fi, especially for RPGs. To use personification, hard sci-fi is so uptight that if you shoved a lump of coal up its ass, in three weeks you'd have a diamond. Other genres are about fun, adventure, and intrigue; hard sci-fi stands at the edge of the...

Condolences to the victims of the Indonesia quake

I apologize. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the families struck by this tragedy. It's tough feeling so powerless, as I'm sure most of us do, when something like that happens to others. :\

How RPGs nearly killed my creativity (and how I got it back)

What I love about the Gazetteer is that it's a nifty little book I can give to players and say, "Here, read this. Your character knows most of this stuff." Great for newbies to the Greyhawk setting. I've actually bought several copies of the Gazetteer and put a sticker on the covers that says...

    How strong is Aquaman?

Over the years, I've heard three theories: 1. Aquaman is super strong, strong enough to punch holes in oil tankers and throw around blue whales. His physical strength rivals that of Wonder Woman or Superman. 2. Aquaman is remarkably strong, but not in the same league as WW or Supes. His...

How does a chaotic society function?

It's fine to have your own beliefs about law and chaos, but the issue in this thread is how law and chaos are defined *in Dungeons & Dragons*, and whether, by *those* definitions, a chaotic society could function. It seems to me that these alignment threads *always* get side-tracked by people...

Condolences to the victims of the Indonesia quake

Oh, come on. Read the whole quote. Obviously, nobody believes that tectonic plates are sentient (I think you meant "sentient" rather than "sentimental" ;) ), but the writer had a definite anti-religious worldview. Which is fine, of course...I was just pointing it out.

How RPGs nearly killed my creativity (and how I got it back)

I agree completely. IT seems to me that you can be a fanboy settings-lawyer, or a wildly creative DM, but not both. Good post.

I just saw Larry Clark's KIDS and I need to talk about it.

I just saw KIDS (1995) and I need to talk. I'm so discouraged by this film. I've seen every horror movie and war movie ever made (hyperbole, but you get the point ;) ). Yet none of them tormented me the way this film did. Comfort me. Tell me that the film is a simple exploitation flick...

Condolences to the victims of the Indonesia quake

Interesting quote, but it is certainly religiously loaded (or secularly loaded, more to the point). The author is basically saying that this quake proves there is no God and no purpose to our existence. I'll stop now before we violate the "no religion" clause. :)

    I despise leftovers

Agreed--I hate the microwave. When I heat up leftover pizza, I *always* use the oven. (Is it lame that I now have two posts in a "leftover preparation" thread? :) )

    I despise leftovers

Galeros, I feel a genuine kinship with you. I frigging HATE leftovers, except for one kind: pizza. (I'm not a lasanga fan to begin with). My wife is enjoying her turkey-this-and-that week, and I'm eating macaroni every night. At least it ain't reheated. ;)

Is the concept of "planes of existence" taken from physics? Religion? Elsewhere?

I'm curious about the concept of different "planes of existence", the material, astral, ethereal, etc. Where exactly does this concept come from? Is it taken from physics? Is it a religious belief? Is it from mythology? Did D&D simply invent it? If you mention "planes of existence" to a...

Personally, I'm going to set an entire adventure in that hotel. It will be a zombie apocalypse-type thing. I'll print out all the pictures the guy posted, and use his descriptions (except for *my* mysterious floor will be, of course, the 23rd :) ). Here's some more info, straight from "the...
