    Pet Peeves....

I suppose that's true. My pet peeve was that it is even *possible* to have an epic peasant or an epic blacksmith. Yet the alternative, that all peasants or blacksmiths are 0-level (AD&D 2e), seems worse. As you're saying, just because we *can* make an epic-level peasant doesn't mean we have...

D&D satanic; here we go again.

I'm a devout Christian, and a DM since 1980. Many other devout Christians don't have an opinion one way or the other. There is a Christian Gamer's Guild online; though the exact address escapes me. Check it out, though.

Not if he's an elf. [PLOINK!] ;)

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

I don't know how people will play D&D during World War III, but I *do* know how they will play during World War IV...with sticks and stones. ;)

    Pet Peeves....

Cool. Since we're both medicated, I guess it's okay for us to bicker. :) As long as we make up. ;)

    Pet Peeves....

I do take medication for clinical depression, but I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to. :\ [For future reference: some people actually *do* take medication for medical conditions, and it isn't something to be made light of.]

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

Not quite. First of all, D&D was *far* more mainstream in the early 80's than it is today. There were D&D action figures at Toys R Us, and even a D&D Saturday morning cartoon, for goodness sake. Second, D&D has *never* been hip and cool, and probably never will. Perhaps you're thinking of...

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

Oh, come on now. Don't be such a big grump. First of all, I am not "pining for days gone by." I love and enjoy all versions of D&D, although with each version I have issues, as do we all. Second, I was not calling *all* 3rd edition fans "die hards." Rather, I was stating that *even those 3rd...

    Pet Peeves....

Two pet peeves: 1. The fact that in 3/3.5 it is possible to have a 40th level Commoner/Expert. I wasn't crazy about AD&D 2e's view that everyone other than the PCs are "0" level, but 3rd edition's response is just dumb. And don't get me started on the fact that that 40th level Commoner/Expert...

    How do YOU wing it?

I don't know if this stream-of-consciousness post of yours is in reply to my post, but it seems that you're suggesting my Reflex save/Strength check concept is somehow "incorrect." Reflex save if he *misses the Jump check*. Reflex save to *avoid falling*. That's what Reflex saves are for...

    How do YOU wing it?

There's a million things you can do re: jumping on the dragon (that's not like jumping a shark, is it? ;) ). Here's what I'd do: 1. "You run off the edge of the castle, jumping for all you're worth! The dragon is below you! Make a Jump check!" [DC=20] Unless I want to be a hardass, in which...

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

And let me make (another) plug for Rules Cyclopedia D&D, which is, by many peoples' reckoning, the best version of D&D ever. Even 3/3.5 die-hards tend to respect RC D&D.

I've finally figured out why 3rd edition bugs me

I had that same feeling back in 1980 when I first saw Intellivision. :heh:

Exactly. More like in a "Mad Max for real, duck for cover" way.

How does one roleplay a 49 Intelligence? Plus! Mega Super *BONUS* Questions!

The very fact that it's possible to *have* a character with a 49 Intelligence is one of the things I dislike about 3e. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm back to the "Third Edition Culture" and "Why 3e Bugs Me" threads... ;)

I've finally figured out why 3rd edition bugs me

If you think it's bad at that "other site" :D you should check out rec.games.frp.dnd. *Those* guys are the biggest rules-Nazis I've ever seen. And downright nasty, a lot of them. Usenet has always been the wild west. Brrrrr....

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

By the way Josh, this "Different Strokes" reference brought a smile to my face. I recently told a group of my students, "If you want to get me something for my birthday, get a time machine and send me back to 1976." I know Different Strokes was 80's. I want to *re-start* my life in '76. :D

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

Excellent question. Speaking for myself, I'd say my primary gripe with 3e is the complexity at higher levels. But I'm also troubled by the sheer amount of crunch in the system as a whole, as others have mentioned. But give me an adventure with 2nd level PCs in 3rd edition, and I'm in my...

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

Have you considered an earlier version of (A)D&D? Right now I'm primarily running 3.0, but due to all the stuff we're discussing in these threads, I'm thinking of running an AD&D 2e game next. In spite of how much some folks dislike 2e, I find it quite a simple system. No feats, no prestige...
