    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 3/17 /14

As one of the probably few people here who runs a game with folks (kids) who have never been exposed to D&D prior to starting this game, having that lore is essential for them. That's how they connect to the game world. Not every game has super in-depth lore with everything having an extensive...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 3/17 /14

It depends. I think if you're playing with people who've already played D&D a bunch and an experienced DM who has the time and energy to custom make things and players who have read through the books carefully, it could (theoretically) propose a problem. However, if you're playing with folks...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 3/17 /14

FWIW, in practice, they've done a fantastic job of balancing Lore and Mechanics for monsters IMO. The mechanics make "sense" w/ respect to the lore, but they're not so restrictive that they can't have their stories changed easily w/o having to mess with the monster. Especially when your game...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 03.10.2014: Full-spellcasting Bard

Monks are sad that you do not have them on the "martial" classes list, btw.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 03.10.2014: Full-spellcasting Bard

FWIW, I'm enjoying Bards as it is. Probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite class so far, behind Warlock (the warlock is soooooooooooooooooo cool) and <redacted>. The article does a pretty good job of summing up what the Bard is; the full spell progression thing isn't that big of a deal. It's...

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

Ahh, my bad. Though Paizo is a slightly different situation due to being OGL bound, and thus having to have the majority of their rules for free online. I could see WotC being a little more cautious initially, then lowering the price.

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

Seeing as the entire public playtest has been done without a DMG - I'm guessing the PH & MM will be the two necessary documents. Couple of thoughts I am skeptical about the dates (for various reasons I cannot discuss); I think those dates are too early. I would expect PHB at GenCon IMO; and...

    Dragonlance Dragonlance and unlimited Cantrips.

I'm also guessing Dragonlance will get its' own books with its' own set of rules - see when Kender was added to the playtest.

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

...Boooooo :-p I would maintain that folks should not worry about it too much, I think it will be replaced for better options.

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

Not sure if it has been reported - but Mearls explicitly stated on twitter that DoaM is gone from NEXT like yesterday or so.

    D&D 5E (2014) Closed Playtest Reports

...I am totally going to propose the "band of ninjas" for SOMETHING in this game.

If you were paid to be a GM

I run a table of Encounters at the local LGS, and my table over time has become populated with a group of younger players (ages 8-12) who are all basically friends. The parents of the kids have asked me to DM for their birthday parties' and have offered to pay; I imagine they'd probably go for...

D&D 5E (2014) Does 5E have to be available as a PDF for you to consider buying it?

I'll want the hardcover books, but I would love the option of PDF. I think they should (and think they will) do both, and those who buy the hardcover books should be given a code to get the PDFs, IMO. Tie it to the dndclassics acct and have at it. I just like books moreso than PDFs...

D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

Based on my experience, I think this is a situation where the standard deviation will be higher than the average. SotSC is a good template I think though. I think saying at 4th level a fighter has access to plate is a fair statement - assuming a swashbuckler type build is supported, I could...

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

Advantage on the damage roll, or even just Brutal 1 or 2 on the damage roll would work for me. Nothing like hitting with a greataxe for 1d12 damage and rolling a 1 to make you feel dumb. I actually like the sweeping idea more than anything, personally.

D&D 5E (2014) Will your monsters roll for damage, or have set damage?

Both In my home game with coworkers - rolled damage. In my game with my younger players (8-12 years old), going to use fixed damage, to teach them division / addition / subtraction / multiplication and algebra. That way, they can figure out how many "hits" they can take and stuff like that...

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

One possible solution could be that they just deal more damage when they do hit, beyond just the die upgrade. Or maybe get a check to see if they would hit any adjacent targets, and if they would have done so, they deal STR damage to that target (great sweep like ability). My only issue with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does D&D Next need +2/-2 modifiers?

I wouldn't read too much into the details of specific abilities, I think they were more concerned with "do people see using superiority dice as a way to do nifty things as good". The math behind a lot of the original abilities was iffy, but from my understanding that was known, and I think...

D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

Understood, but I think part of the problem is that it seems people expected a Pathfinder-esque playtest, where the entire game would be laid bare before launch. That works for Pathfinder, which is a modification of a game on OGL, and that has been played for years prior to launch. Not as much...

D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

There are no adventures currently where a single PC will gain 10000 GP by level 3 or 4 unless everyone else decides to not take their share of the money. (Magic Items notwithstanding). Though, ultimately, they will achieve plate, so we can say that at some point, a SnB fighter will reach AC...
