D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

Just going to say if you're looking for a swashbuckler type of character (be it the rogue way or the fighter way), I would not worry too terribly much about it. Also, no first level fighter is getting plate. Hell, no 3rd level fighter is getting plate. Plate costs 5000 GP. At first level...

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

I didn't particularly care one way or the other, but I do like what the replacement was (I'm a tease!) better than the original perk.

D&D 5E (2014) Things that make you want to buy 5E

Combines the verisimilitude of 3E with the rules simplicity & class balance of 4E, and is the most newbie friendly edition I've ran or played (3E and forward). Also pushes all three of the pillars more in the adventures I've seen so far. (Starting from MiBG) If it can add the modularity...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E imbalance: Don't want to play it

Based on what I've seen - I don't think (ok I'm reasonably sure) that's not what they intended to do as much as poor clarification on how the spell works. Think it's supposed to be a single dex save (succeed) or a single str + single dex (if you fail).

D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

There's no swashbuckler option in the public playtest; so I'm not sure that's a fair comparison. I do think that most options should fall into the 80-100 range, and so far, from best I can tell, they do so.

D&D 5E (2014) Things that make you want to buy 5E

As we discovered, you were playing a rather out of date ruleset of the game, even on a public playtest document level. :-p I wouldn't be so quick to jump to say certain parts of those statements are "opinion", seeing as I'm reasonably sure you haven't gotten to consistently DM the latest public...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E imbalance: Don't want to play it

Evard's has the same issue Web does - I am hoping all such spells will get clarification. I wouldn't worry much about Dominate. :D

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E imbalance: Don't want to play it

Aye, based on the public playtest, I've voiced my concerns about the potential AoE action denial web has; but I think that has more to do with clarification of how the spell works. Polymorph is the other spell (what a surprise, right?) that based on the public playtest needs some clarification...

Legends & Lore: What Worked, What Didn't

I can't say for sure, sadly. There are times where I've thought not much was done, and then the next packet had a crapton of stuff all dropped on us at once. Even the latest one was a massive jump from the previous ones, so maybe they do have way more planned. Thinking about it further, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E imbalance: Don't want to play it

Save DC is 8 + Casting Mod + Prof bonus (it says 10+ in the how to play document, but the actual classes file says 8 +). Because if I'm reading Web right, they get a save when it is first cast, and then a strength check if they do get hit. Also, if anyone hits the wizard (who, because they...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Real Issue (TM) Process Sim?

Mark Cronan ‏@YetiMoose Feb 5 @mikemearls Damage On a Miss seems to remain the greatest source of fan tension. Can you tell us where you're at on this concept now? Reply Retweet Favorite More Expand Mark Cronan ‏@YetiMoose Feb 13 @mikemearls Damage On a Miss seems to remain the...

Legends & Lore: What Worked, What Didn't

I have noticed in each successive public playtest, that the capabilities of casters have been dwindling. Not necessarily nerfing the spells, but the amount of spells known, or the amount of spells they can cast, is smaller, or the DC drops. I think that's an important trend to keep in mind...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Real Issue (TM) Process Sim?

Looking through Mike Mearls' twitter account; I don't think Damage on a Miss is a thing any more.

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Think Spare the Dying is a Problem?

Based on the open playtest rules, I will second the "death rules are problematic" camp. They definitely need some more options on how to handle death, and spare the dying should either (a) be a full action or (b) stabilization only. I like negative HP equal to CON Score + Level personally.

Legends & Lore: What Worked, What Didn't

Ahh, k, I knew I heard that somewhere. Basically, as best as I can tell, the ways to be a playtester for all RPG companies (Paizo, WotC, White Wolf, pretty much every RPG company is guilty of this) a) be known online as a blogger / writer for the system b) live in the home city of the company...

    D&D 5E (2014) What a DM has to do in 5E

    1) Haven't had an issue with the first. Cantrips help the issue (casters don't feel as worthless going forward), and the "one rest every 24 hours" rule (IIRC) puts a damper on that. Also, the inability to layer spells successively (concentration) means that it's not nearly worth it to blow...

Legends & Lore: What Worked, What Didn't

Thankfully the rumor is that they brought on the Magic guys for math tuning - so I pretty confident that the math will get finely tuned near the end of the process (this is just what I've heard living around Seattle). I also do know that in many cases, the options sent out in the playtest...
