Games that are fun, but need a one-in-a-million GM

OK, I happen to agree with a lot of the games that have been mentioned thus far. I love Mage, but damn it is hard to run. The mechanics are easy enough, but in every game I've tried to play, the GM and one or more players had incompatible ideas of just how magic worked and it fell apart. I...

    Do you study martial arts?

Here's a question for eveyrone out there. I don't know when this occurred to me, but it seems that all the martial arts I have seen always wind up with the aggressor losing in any given situation. No matter how we are taught to deal with a situation, we all take advantage of the fact that...

    Do you study martial arts?

This is a point I always try to keep in mind. If you know how to read someone and observe a situation, you will know when you can run and when you have to stand your ground. One thing I've discovered about TKD is that I wouldn't want to use it to someone I didn't plan to send to the hospital or...

    Do you study martial arts?

Oddly enough, I've discovered that Master Shin (my instructor) is usually dead on when I question him about whether the "proper" form is also the most effective. Generally, it turns out that I am doing them wrong. Go fig. <g> I have never seen someone old enough to be my grandfather hip-toss...

[OT] Attorneys on the EnWorld boards

Well, I've got a science background, so I can probably make a living as a patent lawyer, though I know a lot more about trademarks, copyrights, and such. Part of me wants to go into federal law enforcement. The things some people do with computers drives me crazy. And I'm not talking about...

    Do you study martial arts?

When I was a kid I took Isshiynryu karate. I loved it but after awhile, I had no time, which was unfortunate. I like the vertical fist they use for punches - no twisting at the end. Started fencing in high school. Went with saber because I could use the point and the edge of the blade. In...

    Do you study martial arts?

How do two Aikido practitioners fight to the death? Do they stand there waiting for the other guy to move until one of them passes out from exhaustion? I thought the whole point of Aikido was that anyone stupid enough to attack you deserved everything you were about to do to him.

    Do you study martial arts?

Strip fencing is a martial art in the same way that Olympic style tae kwon do is. It's designed to score points within a certain rules framework. That being said, a fencing blade is still a simulation of a real weapon. Many of the techniques that people use in modern fencing have their origins...

    Favorite Wizard/Sorcerer/Arcane Magic Sourcebook?

I agree that a number of the prestige classes in Path of Magic are a bit on the powerful side, but OTOH, I really got turned off by a bunch of the spells in the Relics & Rituals book that strike me as more than a teensy bit overpowered. I guess I look at it this way - I can fix a prestige class...

[OT] Attorneys on the EnWorld boards

Good luck, JPL... though for the sake of confidentiality, it might be a good idea not to talk much more about the case while it's still pending. <g> Never can tell when some judge or prosecutor will flip out over something like this.

I thought it was Vermont or New Hampshire that had a system like that.

Cool. Right now, I work for Lexis-Nexis in an editorial position. I'm currently pursuing an LLM in information technology and privacy law at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. So, DB - you've got the job I'm hoping for. How's the practice been lately?

    Favorite monsters in the MM2?

My favorites, huh? 1. The Phoenix. (needs to be there) 2. The Hellfire Wyrm (just plain rocks) What do I wish they had included? The Flumph. Just because.

    Favorite Wizard/Sorcerer/Arcane Magic Sourcebook?

Mine is probably Path of Magic. Fantasy Flight seems to have a better grasp of game balance than Sword and Sorcery or Mongoose do, and it's a lot meatier than Tome & Blood. Plus, I get a hardcover for $25, which rocks, and I REALLY like the alternative classes and the cool special skills you can...

    Creative Mountain Games Comments...

I'm in total agreement thus far. While I haven't had the opportunity to read all of the stuff on the CMG website, the writing is very good and Jalston is a well constructed, well thought out town. Wish I could say more about it, but been busy lately, and haven't had much time to read gaming...

    Gnome invention rules

Don't have anything quite like it from what I know, but Magic of Faerun has a Gnomish artificer PrC. In addition, Deadlands d20 has rules for mad science (not terribly unlike gnomish inventions), and Dragonstar has several gadget-type classes.

    Superhero systems?

Re: Mutants & Masterminds Hmmm. Reminds me a little bit of the system Godlike used for its d20 rules - you spend your EXP to raise things, but you also track it to find out what "level" you are. So basically, saying that someone is a 150 point character is the same thing as calling someone a...
