    Basiran Dancer????

It's more like a performance-themed pyschic warrior and less like a bard. You have to be dancing to pull off most stuff. I've found that it works well as an "elven bladesinger" type of class.

    In-game age...

It sort of depends on what you want to do and how your campaign is set up. In a 3rd ed. game we just wrapped up (pending 3.5 conversion), I was playing a young child who wielded sorcerous powers. Most of the "effects" were either based more on the statisical effects (low physical attributes) or...

    Heiromphant vs. ARchmage (3.5)

I saw the preview versions of the Archmage and the Heirophant when they were released online and both of the classes were pretty much identical - you sacrificed spellcaster levels for neat metamagical powers. In the game we were playing at the time, we used those versions (nobody had gthe FRCS)...

    Mage Killer

You might go with a Barbarian/Rogue combo as well. The barbarian's mobility, the rogue's sneak attack dice, and evasion might give you what you want.

    Building A Better Vampire

I dunno, Shark. I'm pretty happy with the vampire as it stands. If I want to make it nastier, I just give it class levels. I threw a vampiric monk at a 10th level party with 1.5X starting GP and wound up with a TPK. Granted, I allowed it to use its unarmed attack progression (this was 3.0) with...

    3.5 Monster Manual Issues

Re: Re: 3.5 Monster Manual Issues Wow. And I thought only White Wolf actively torpedoed any notion of internal consistency.

    3.5 Monster Manual Issues

So I've been flipping through my new 3.5 ed books, looking for relevant changes to one of my characters, who happened to be a lycanthrope. 1. I like the fact that afflicted lycanthropes now have a ECL modifier. So now we know what happens when your PC gets bitten and fails that saving throw...

Thinking about hanging up the D&D (not RPG) towel (longish).

It sounds like you guys have more fun playing something else, so play something else. I mean, everyone else is right. There's no reason to play a game that you don't enjoy. If you guys can play together with another system with fewer arguments about exactly how to do it, then go ahead and use...

Best RPG purchase past 6 months

    Probably Nobilis and Savage Worlds.

    Monte Cook reviews 3.5

That may well be, but miniatures should be a cool option for a roleplaying game, not a requirement. I'm in a 3.0 game now and GM is trying to play without miniatures or even a map. Not only have a lot of feats (like Combat Reflexes) been rendered pointless, but the game is actually *slower*...

    Why Magic Weapons?

Well, since you used the katana as an example, the Rokugan book has a prestige class that gains the ability to imbue weapons and armor with nonmagical enhancement bonuses. I did something similar, but I scrapped the notion of needing a prestige class to do it. Basically, since making a...

If D&D had as many new editions as MtG...

If D&D came out with a new edition as fast as Magic: the Gatheirng comes out with new editions, I'd force my entire group to start playing BESM or Savage Worlds.

    Should adventurers be "better"?

Ability scores are the potential that helps heroes get to those high levels. As GM's go, I'm fairly ruthless. If the players mess up, I make them fight their way out of their own holes. The odds I stack against them are made for characters who are truly exceptional in all senses of the word.

    Should adventurers be "better"?

Nah. 25 points does't create weak heroes. It creates relatively normal people who are bone-headed enough to make a career out of risking their lives for treasure. And it all depends what characters want to play and the goals of my campaign. If I want the characters to overthrow a corrupt baron...

Point buy - How high do you go? (and why)

Yeah. I always gave mine 40 points to play with. I tried 32 points and I found myself killing them off too fast. I want my characters to be a cut above everyone else, and I consider it a roleplaying challenge to my players to take a character with all sorts of potential (i.e. good stats) and...

    Midnight Binding Issues

Hey, all! I've been thinking about picking up Midnight and using it for an upcoming campaign, but a friend advised me that his copy is falling apart after only light reading. Anyone else had similar problems? Or is this just a fluke?

    Should adventurers be "better"?

Some measure of the three. You need the raw ability first of all. If you have two left feet and ten thumbs, well, it's doubtful that you'll make much in the way of a hero. Ability is the potential from which a hero's exploits will be realized. So should adventurers have better stats than...

    Poor sword and shield?

Honestly, I think Sword & Board is by far the most powerful of the three melee weapon styles (Sword & Board, Two Weapon, and Two-Hander). Here's why. 1. Two Weapon fighting frankly sucks a whole lot. Your AC isn't good and the extra attacks don't do enough damage because of the reduced STR...
