How may martial artists are out there in the Rpg world?

My father practices Tai Chi. He learned it from his father when he was a kid in Hong Kong. Sound hokey enough? It's true though. <g> Anyway, from observing and working out with him, I've noticed that a lot of those flowing, graceful Tai Chi moves are, if done at full speed, actually...

How may martial artists are out there in the Rpg world?

I started with modern sport fencing. Before anyone goes off on me about how it's not "real" swordfighting, there are certain principles that remain the same. 1. You want to hit your opponent with the dangerous part of your weapon. 2. You want to prevent the dangerous part of your opponent's...

How may martial artists are out there in the Rpg world?

I like these threads a lot. I'd like to second the statement from before - it's great to see people talk about this stuff like mature adults. Anyway, I started with Isshinryu karate when I was a kid. Sort of fell out of it around high school, when I picked up fencing (olympic style, modern...

[BADD] Bastion of Broken Souls. ***SPOILERS***

We played through the adventure. Actually, I found the dragon to be less of a challenge than some of those con-draining monsters that kept jumping out of nowhere, with their high attack bonuses AND their ability to make touch attacks. Then again, our big-damage characters had brilliant-energy...

How to make a player stop being a paladin

I don't really think that a paladin has to be so easy to "mess with." I mean, when I think of a paladin I think of a warrior who acts as the sword of Law and Goodness. For those of you who read David Eddings, I think of Sparhawk and the other knights. They could be right mean bastards at times...

What game mechanics do you like?

Personally, I like active defenses. Defense shouldn't simply be figured into a target number for your opponent to meet. I like the idea Mutants & Masterminds uses for a "Damage Save." I might try to base something on that. Perhaps you get a "dodge" (or parry or shield block) per round as a free...

So you dislike 3e...Why post here?

For a lot of us, it's not that we don't like 3rd edition. If we didn't at least tolerate it, we wouldn't play. Personally, I have a lot of fun with D&D, but I get leery about the application of the d20 system with all it's limitations, to other genres of game that just don't work well with the...

Are your players allowed to play 'special' characters?

I let my players build the characters they want to build as long as they (1) work under the rules, (2) can work in a party of characters, and (3) have a good concept to back them up. I like half-dragons, lycanthropes, and the like in my games. It's cool. The PC's are the most important people...

    [FFG] Path of Shadows

Sounds cool. Will it have any guidelines on how to figure out what an ECL for a given critter might be?

OT: Real World Vile Darkness! (Funny)

I would swear that it wasn't. These people really do exist (it's scary). Even if they don't have an official "society" they and their jettas are invading Chicago. So what do you think? The Trixies as a society of Vile Darkness? Spreading the influence of some kind of dark power that encourages...

    D20 Wuxia

It'd be fantastic. We did a couple Feng-Shui style sessions awhile back and there are some things we came up with. 1. Characters need to take a lot of damage. The pounding characters in such movies take is unbelievable. For something like this, the HP system fits the paradigm. 2. Characters...

    My rant at RPG.net

Whoa, really? Having met him, Steven is very intelligent, talented, and an all around cool buy. And he has put out some of the best designed stuff anywhere. I love HERO-5, though God help me trying to find a group to play it. Everyone around here seems to play nothing but D&D 3rd.

OT: Real World Vile Darkness! (Funny)

Angelsboi wrote: "am i missing something? What the hell is a trixie?" A trixie is a member of the Lincoln Park Trixie society. They're like real-life barbie dolls or something. It's a social club gone horribly, horribly wrong. Shadow64 wrote: "BTW - Synicism, how in the hell did you find...

OT: Real World Vile Darkness! (Funny)

I swear this is some kind of evil cult. And what's worse, they are apparently real people. <g> http://www.lptrixie.com

Legendary Classes: better in theory than practise?

I've played around with a couple of them for some NPC's that characters have had a chance to encounter in a game I run. They work OK, but I think that they are best when modified somewhat to work as epic level prestige classes.

    Evil Characters in good campaigns?

Generally, evil characters' morals (or lack thereof) will ultimately conflict with their good/neutral companions'. Read Dragonlance and check out Raistlin. It can sometimes work, but generally when you have a lawful character who does, in fact, believe in honor and companionship. I pulled it...

Designing Deities - Please help my tortured brain!

You don't *really* need the ELH to write up a deity, but it does help. The first thing you have to do is decide what your deity's class, level, and race are going to be. If he has more than one, that's fine. Most of the deities in the book have 20 "outsider" levels and 40 class levels, for a...

[OT] Can a chineese dao sabre go against armor?

Are you planning on buying a combat-grade weapon here? If so, I don't recommend sparring against someone with it. They make practice weapons for that. A real sword of any kind is usually pretty ineffective against steel plate armor. That's why the mace and the lance what knights used against...

Quintessential Splatbooks vs the Wizards Class Books

Odd... granted that I could live without the WotC powergaming tips most of the time, I've found that the Quintessential prestige classes have been either underpowered or seriously munchkin. Same with a lot of the feats and equipment. I'm also not a huge fan of the "character concepts" section...
