    Will all spells be attacks?

Hmm. They've been so close-mouthed about rituals, I don't feel I can reveal too much, and it's hard to say something brief without some people jumping to the wrong conclusion. I'll just say that it really is a separate magic system, with restrictions and variables of its own. No question about...

    Will all spells be attacks?

I'm just doing a quick skim of things, so I haven't had a chance to read through the whole four page thread. However, let me hit a few points within the limits of what I can say. Powers are effects designed to be used in an encounter (whether a combat encounter or a noncombat encounter - for...

And maybe it does. Have you seen the actual official final wording of the power? If so, where? I'd like to make sure I have it right in MY campaign!

Which is where multiclassing comes in. While I can't say anything about how multiclassing works, and while I'm running Eberron instead of core, I've made a rogue-paladin on essentially this principle. The rogue-paladin darts in to flank a foe, does his sneak attack, and says "Tymora's eye is on...

*Sigh* Teach me not to check - I'd thought one of the DDXP characters was a dragonborn. Obviously the R&C entry mentioned a breath weapon being associated with the race, so it's not coming out of left field. I will say that people should wait until they see a dragonborn character before jumping...

Again, I'm NOT quoting the rules, I'm describing the effect. The actual manner in which it is implemented seems very sound to me.

I'll just note that you shouldn't assume that everything in Races & Classes is canon. Note that the paladin's challenge changed after DDXP. Obviously the game is at the printers NOW, but the designers were continuing to explore things up to the end. Races & Classes is a reflection of early...

Which is exactly why we pushed our way to the wall and got back-to-back when we realized just how ugly it was. It didn't help that three of the kobolds we were fighting had sneak attack!

A few things... First, on the final fight in general, the thing I'll emphasize is how much fun I had with it. We were first level characters. The DM threw a horde of kobolds at us. We ended up dying. But in the process we had all sorts of interesting abilities to use and decisions to make. As I...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder

Just as a quick aside... I did indeed "explicitly state" that I can see places where 4E has drawn inspiration from MMOs, although in the same thread pointed out that it's not just a copy of an MMO - it draws inspiration from certain MMO principles and adapts them, just as when I've worked on...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

OK, ok, just one more (it's like potato chips...). This is what I see as the core of the issue. One of my favorite game systems is Over The Edge. One of the things I love about it is that every campaign is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. There's no class roles, no expectations; you can play virtually...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

You're right... and they DO (as shown by the three characters in that group I described with significant social talents). Not a talent TREE (and I can't speak to rules in any case) but what I've been saying all along is that it is possible for characters to shine in noncombat situations and that...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

Well, bear in mind I haven't seen all the rules. So there could be lots of things that either I haven't seen, or that have changed since I've seen them. Not saying there are, of course - simply that I'm not an official or fully reliable source here.

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

As a side note, I'm not suggesting that the fact that characters have something to do out of combat is somehow new or unique to 4E. Cleric-as-Diplomat, Ranger-as-keen-eyed-spy is classic D&D. Which is essentially my point. 4E doesn't somehow take away the ability to make a character who shines...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

Sure. The question is whether in a game like D&D - in which combat is expected to play a significant role in the typical campaign (how many adventure paths have you see that are entirely social?) - should it have to be a choice? Or should characters be able to shine in both melee and noncombat -...

Respond in kind, would you? I've been meaning to get in touch with Dan for a geological age. Better yet, just tell Dan that you believe in Slimo.

Fair enough, and I certainly understand the frustration. I'm going to return to lurk mode now, as I'm going to be traveling for the next few days. Hopefully more information WILL be forthcoming, because I'd love to be able to discuss multiclassing, rituals, and all the rest in an open environment!

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

Sure, Spatula, but flip it around. What do you expect me to do? I've played with a non-combat system - rituals - that I really like. I'm legally bound not to reveal any information until it's actually released by WotC. I then see someone say "4E magic sucks. It's all just damage." I know...

D&D 4E Keith Baker on 4E! (The Hellcow responds!)

And I wish I could say more. Since WotC_Miko is a WotC employee and hasn't PM'd me to say "What the $#^% are you doing? Shut up already!" I'm hoping I haven't crossed any legal lines. I do need to try to scale back my comments, just since I need to actually get some paying work done one of these...

I'd argue that the rogue has the exact same ability today. As I said, Bluff or Acrobatics? Streetwise or Stealth? Class and personal choice are still involved in your skills, and the "everyone advances" thing plays a secondary role. Again, I look to the warlock in my group - the shady...
