hehe That reminds me of a full story. Buddy in the group is being seduced by a lone woman NPC in the group. They were all trapped on an island after waking up in a strange lab, all that freaky stuff, and she's the only female in sight. Plus she's all innocent, dress hanging off her shoulder...

I do these as DM for as many characters as possible and it really helps to make the characters stand out much faster. The noble ranger sounds like Sean Connery, the town guard sounds like the dopey cop from Hot Fuzz (the one who doesn't know how to do his job), and the manipulative devourer...

Ooh, I like. The bloodier you are, the harder you are to see. Picture a character covered in blood, trying to sneak past a wraith, only to encourage the ghouls around the corner into a frenzy.

77IM: Simple, but does the trick. I think this falls under granting darkvision prior to the third step, however, as they do have it as soon as using the first ritual. But I think the ritual itself would work fine at that level if only for one character. I agree that nothing too much higher...

True enough. I don't really have any of the others worked out so far (although I'm close enough to being set on the second exercise for this month), so I don't know if there will ever be an incremental difficulty as each exercise continues. Some may just be tougher than others right off the bat...

Nice. It grants a version of darkvision that's the same thing, but wags your tongue at the DM and says "It's not darkvision - it's an ability to see in the dark."
