Quick question: Can you use a shield while mounted?

You make a compelling argument :D But no one has suggested any alternatives... my DM has already okayed my custom feat that removes the -2 attack penalty (Tower Shield Specialization). So, I either have to fight on foot as much as possible, thus making the point of having a mount, well...

    What's the Deal with Staves?

Because the "minor area" where it is said is under "Creating Staffs". I don't care what it says anywhere else. That, and I'm a stubborn SOB, just like most of the people on this board. ;) Calypso

    What's the Deal with Staves?

I never said you shouldn't. I was just pointing out what the rules said. In all honesty, with the exception of scrolls/potions/wands, I price anything my players want to make. They give me what they want the item to be, and I give them the price that they can get it for, if at all. Calypso

Quick question: Can you use a shield while mounted?

A Pavise was set on the ground, often in a stand, and archers stood behind them. There's not really any way ANYONE could fight with one of those, mounted or not. Obviously, tower shields can be used in combat, so I think it must be smaller. Calypso

    What's the Deal with Staves?

The "having words" was in regards to a player trying to min/max the staff by having a high-level spell that they don't plan on using that takes 50 charges. So, say I want a staff of Fireball (1 charge). Normally, it would be 3*5*750=11250. Now, consider this staff: Wall of Fire (50 charges)...

D&D 3.x Composite bows: no limit on bonus in 3.5?

Exactly! And, no, there is no such limit in 3.5. Calypso

    What's the Deal with Staves?

Good point. I noticed that incongruency, and just sorta shook my head and read it literally. However, I have to pull the "That's what the DM is for" card. If someone tried to put a staff by me that did that, we'd have words. Calypso

    What's the Deal with Staves?

    As I said, you order the spells in order of Spell Level, not cost. So it's: Wall of Fire: 4(spell level) * 8(CL) * 750gp * 1/2 (2 charges) = 12000 Fireball: 3(spell level) * 8(CL) * 750 * 3/4 (second highest level spell) = 13500 Burning Hands: 1(spell level) * 8(CL) * 750 * 1/2 (third and...

    What's the Deal with Staves?

"Well, it's not exactly a standard staff! The Luck bonus to AC and saves is wondrous-itemmy. I'd guess the Shield is a custom at-will spell-trigger ability that uses the activator's caster level, rather than a normal staff power. -Hyp." Hypersmuff had it right. It's not a regulation staff...

According to the rules, the most charges that a spell can use is 2. So no, you can't get really cheap powers by making useless higher level ones take 50 charges. Calypso

    What's the Deal with Staves?

Damn, you're right. I missed the part RIGHT BEFORE "375 gp × the level of the highest-level spell..." that says: "The cost for the materials is subsumed in the cost for creating the staff". Oh well. then double my previous figure. And I don't know how they got their price then. Calypso

Unless you change Dwarf to Human you're going to suffer an XP penalty for Monk being more than 1 level away from Paladin. EDIT: Also, you can only Flurry when unarmored. EDIT: Also, you take a -2 penalty to attacks while using a tower shield. EDIT: Also, I'm just pointing out things as I go...

    What's the Deal with Staves?

From the item creation section: "For many items, the market price equals the base price." In addition, it says the following: "375 gp × the level of the highest-level spell × the level of the caster, plus 75% of the value of the next most costly ability (281.25 gp × the level of the spell × the...
