D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

Well. You said the system only goes in one direction. I took that to mean that the active part of the "combat" was rolling dice. If combat is resolved only by what the players are doing, does that mean it's not actually a combat system? Perhaps I'm missing something, if so, please clarify.

D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

Again, depends on the system. I have at least one system I can think of where all of the rolling for combat is done by the players. Does this mean it isn't a combat system?

D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

Ta-da! You've just invented an ad-hoc social combat system!

This comes down to whether or not players are willing to seperate character knowledge from player knowledge.

D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

Only in that the player has already agreed to allow their PC to be permanently removed from affecting the narrative. If the player agrees to allow their PC to be convinced of something because the rules say they are, then there is no difference. I disagree. The player can easily refuse to have...

D&D General What Kind Of Setting Does Your Group Use?

I'm curious as to what options you would use in a similar poll.

D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

Well, what happens when the PCs lose in combat? This example only holds up in games where the GM builds combat encounters to be "balanced" against the PCs abilities. If this is not the case then combat encounters are almost always asymmetrical in that one side or the other has a distinct...

D&D General What Kind Of Setting Does Your Group Use?

What kind of setting does your group use most often? 1) A professionally created setting published by WotC or a 3rd party. 2) A homebrew setting created exclusively by the GM with little or no input from the players. 3) A homebrew setting created using a collaborative effort by the GM and...

D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

Burning Wheel's Duel of Wits. Each side in an argument is given a certain amount of "hit points" and the argument itself is conducted basically the same as a combat with the winner retaining some "hit points" when the loser reaches zero. The best part is that the duel rarely gives the winner a...

OD&D Melee range and occupied space in BECMI/RC

Nah. It never seemed to matter. Or more importantly, you just went with whatever seemed logical.

D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

I like how you describe this, especially the part where the dice roll (success or failure) comes first. I see that as a sign of a great player and good roleplaying. I usually see it used the other way, where the player delivers a line and then the dice get rolled determining whether or not the...

OSR Red Box, but like modern I guess?!?!?

Well I picked up Dark Dungeons. It looks like what I am looking for, though Old School Essentials also interests me. I will definitely read up on the other systems that have been listed. That you for the additional suggestions!

The player insisted they be able to play an elf. They refused a human with elf-like tendencies. The setting was humans only so no other elf-like people were available, just humans. They insisted they be allowed to play an elf because the core rules of the system we were tentatively supposed to...

I did. The Player wanted to play an Elf in a setting where there are no Elves. What would the compromise be, allow them to play an Elf? Bonus for the player, as they then became free to find a group where they can play a Teenager Mutant Ninja Turtle! Even better, the group that took in said...

Well let's see. I started with the Red Box (BECMI) in 1988 after my aunt got it for me for a Christmas present. Then in 1989 she got me the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB, DM Guide and Monsterous Compendium Binder. In 1992 I got the WEG Star Wars 2nd Edition and switched mostly to that as my group...

I wasn't being mean, nor do I consider dropping a player from a group that wants to play a campaign they are obviously not interested in to be a mean thing. Now, forcing a player to play in a campaign they don't want to be a part of would be a mean thing. Or even worse, saying it's okay they...

I don't think there is a default RPG. D&D being more popular, yes, but default, no. I know how popular it is. That still doesn't mean it's the default. I know I haven't used D&D since the mid 90s. Uh...okay. Well, you were the one that pointed out that it was unimportant so...okay. I also...
