D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I think genre conventions, setting knowledge, and the like, does play a part. Social conflict in particular, however, seems to rely almost exclusively on how well a player knows the GM. If the player knows what the GM "wants to hear" then they will be able to portray a socially adept PC. If they...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I think "skilled play" is just the players understanding the idiosyncrasies of the GM.

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Which is totally superfluous to whether or not social or combat encounters be decided by GM fiat. No matter the stakes, GM fiat deciding the outcome of an encounter, is GM fiat deciding the outcome of an encounter. For me it's a side effect of playing TTRPGs with people I either don't know...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Avoiding the combat would be avoiding the check in the first place, it would be avoiding the social interaction. The outcome of the combat or social interaction shouldn't be decided by GM fiat, IMHO. Would "player skill" folks be okay with the outcome of a combat encounter being decided soley by...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

In essence, yes. While this is an extreme example, it could be done. That would be one way to do it. True, but also potentially doable if wanted. I'm just not a fan of "player skill" determining social challenges when "system skill" is used to decide everything else. I don't rely on a...

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

All things D&D. Old D&D. New D&D. Especially professionally published D&D with someone's houserules. Wow am I tired of "the next new hotness/D&D killer/fantasy heartbreaker" being just YET ANOTHER version of houseruled D&D. I swear a this point there has to be like a thousand very slightly...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Supposedly, the GM is not supposed to decide the outcome of all things and rely on Math Rock to determine. It's the outcome of a check the Math Rock is for, not the existence of check in the first place. Sure the GM can say "no the guard can't be negotiated with" but that would eliminate the...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

This means all social situations are decided by GM fiat. Not a good thing IMHO.

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I like Mythras and other BRP/RQ systems specifically because the vast majority of the time the players know the exact percentage chance they have of succeeding at a skill roll. It's written on their character sheet, right beside the name of the skill.

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

Awesome! Thank you! I am beginning to think that there is less of a dichotomy between Task and Conflict as I originally thought. Mostly it appears that I am thinking of Conflict in too broad of a sense.

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

I have at least one system that has the "one roll combat" option, in a addition to two other more complex systems. One that needs a few rolls to adjudicate, and one that is highly structured and complicated and features alot of rolls.

What's the most efficient way to plan a one-shot TTRPG adventure?

I do the boring old 3 Act Structure thing. With a Conclusion that (if I can swing it) culminates in a TPK. Because, well, no one seems to mind if their PC dies in a one shot, so it's a chance to play a "killer DM" game.

🤣 That is a totally awesome way to frame it!

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

This alone is why I am confused how to use the "roll for intent" thing. On a different forum I was alerted to the fact that my OP terms are wrong, that the rolling dichotomy is usually framed as Task Resolution vs Conflict Resolution. With Task the moments in the narrative where interruption...

How many were abused due to their love of D&D, RPGs, and related items when they were young?

I got picked on and roughed up in high-school (90s) because I was a "four eyed nerd" who liked fantasy and sci-fi and TTRPGs. At least till I started taking tae-kwon-do and punched one of my bullies hard enough in the throat that he couldn't speak for several days. For some weird reason they...

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

So I've got the gist of it at least? I should perhaps be thinking about scenes in more discreet sections, and frame goals and stakes on that instead of the overarching goal? I am not. 😟

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

I am not entirely sure what you mean by this. Is there any way you could provide an example?

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

Note: Poll for entertainment and research purposes only. Roll for Effect [Task Oriented Rolls]: The roll is made to determine if the task the character is trying to accomplish is successful. Roll for Intent [Goal Oriented Rolls]: The roll is made to determine if the goal the character is tying...
