D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

So...all humans are the same?!?!? I'm not convinced that non-human characters are anything other than humans who look like non-humans with some mechanical bonuses. Uh...okay...all the fluff you include in your responses makes it difficult for me to figure out the point you are trying to make. I...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

For some reason I envisioned a guy doing cartwheels while saying this as I read it. My imagination is messed up. I'm going to bed.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Agreed. That's another reason why I prefer to have human only campaigns. Instead of fending off the raiding orcs, it's fending off the raiding humans. Instead of the evil goblins raiding caravans, it's evil humans. The terrible evil lurking in the mountains isn't a tribe of hobgoblins, it's a...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Well if it's a D&D world, so the gods are real, so holding their belief in a real god against them would be strange I guess. However if I'm a human, and that guy has claws and a tail, and the other guy can breathe fire, and that girl over there is realted to a demon, well, that might be the...

    HISTORICAL CAMPAIGNS

I like to call what I do a-historical games. In that they are based on real events, and take place in history, but resemble the real world history about as good as Hollywood movies that are based on real events. Sometimes very closely, sometimes not closely at all.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Well, for all intents and purposes the word "Fantasy" is devalued to the point of uselessness. What is "Fantasy" I wonder? Does it have to include Wizards and Swords? Can it include Space Ships? What about Guns? What about Artificial Gravity? Faster Than Light Travel? Star Wars has Wizards and...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

The whole working things down to what the player actually wants thing is what I do too. I just do it so the end result is they play a human that meets their needs. If they really have to play an actual Hutt, then I'm also with you in that it's simply a no go.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

And if you look to may native Canada you will see how a huge portion of the population hasn't homogenized. In fact protections against such a thing happening are not just law, the are enshrined in our Constitution. As long as people resist homogenization it doesn't happen.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

No, I just see distinct cultures beside each other that have never homogenized. Is German culture the same as French culture, the same as Italian culture? No? Why not? These cultures have existed together for centuries, why have they not homogenized? It's because people don't want them to and...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Nah, Kender are innocent, that stuff just fell into their pouch! Humor aside, once long ago in a Dragonlance game I actually had a player that ran his Kender in a not disruptive fashion. To this day he is one of the best roleplayers I have ever met and his Kender was one of my favorite PCs. By...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

I also run games so the players and I can have fun. I however am not interested in running games that I wouldn't find fun. If I need to restrict certain things to maintain my fun I will, and feel justified doing so. In a D&D game I definitely wouldn't allow Evil characters as I have no interest...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Am I as DM obliged to run games for everyone and anyone, or do I at least have a say in that? Cause after participating in this thread I have a feeling that it's better for my sanity and enjoyment that I am not obliged to do so! Just the gist I have gotten from participating in this thread...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Nope. The players never asked for a compromise because I exclusively run human only games because I don't normally run D&D. However in an upcoming campaign I wish to run a D&D campaign for nostalgias sake and the compromise was that we would play a BECMI clone. I wanted to try 5e, they told me...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Yeah, but it is the player side that seems to think that if they ask the DM side to compromise that the DM side MUST compromise.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Agreed! It's not! Themes can easily be rehashed to fit a human, fluff is fluff and can be refluffed at will.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

I agree! However this in no way means that a compromise must be reached. The example given was a false equivalence. I'm not sure where you are going with this question. I'm a cranky old guy so I want to say anything other than human and I'm unhappy. However, being D&D I guess I would allow...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

Well, this is an example of false equivalency. A dog is a real thing with certain inherent qualities like mammal and carbon based life form. With the exception of the word robot, all the other words you've used to describe the dog do not change it's inherent qualities. I personally would be...
