No. I'd love to someday have 1-5 of the rarer monsters I like to use (Beholders, various dragons, Mindflayers, various undead, etc), and 15+ of the monsters I tend to use alot (orcs, various mook undead, drow). I'm not really hurting for minis... but at least one frickin' beholder would be nice :p

I don't know about "too literal", it seems pretty obvious (to me) just reading the feat and relevant druid info in the PHB. It makes for a slightly beefier animal companion, whether you're a druid, a ranger, or multiclassed druid. It could have been written better to give first tier animal...

And lets not forget the forces of undeath (vampire PC or cohort with vampire master prc lvl... HD +cha x2 in vampiric HD for minions... each of which have a base of HD x2 in thier own minions). :D
