D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

With as few feats as we get in 3e, I would much rather just have Cleave = Great Cleave. Or perhaps have feats Scale like they do in the Tomes.

Do people in your games actually use "builds"

By this definition, I have never planned out a "build". I usually don't plot out much past level 11... maybe up to 15.

DM poll: How much damage would you let a nail-club do?

I voted d6. You can twohand just about anything (as long as its not "light"?). If your PC is a weapon crafter and rolled well enough, I suppose I would count it as a morningstar.

Obective look at WotC's history with D&D

There was a Dragonlance movie? :runs off to IMDB:

Psionic Duergar and Magic in the Blood

The OP is talking about a feat that changes your innate / racial SLAs from 1/day to 3/day. This should work no matter if the SLA is arcane, divine, or psionic in flavor. If you were in reference to the fact that we get two versions of each of the craft feats, because "Psionics is slightly...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

My faith in WotC's ability to find that middle ground is weak. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be the one trying to find it.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Apples and oranges mate. an explosion involving a 20ft wide swath of fire is a far cry from a warrior swinging wide and still managed to hurt you somehow. On the other hand, a module that said something like "If you are missed by an attack due solely to Armor, you still take 1/4th as...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Since you asked, no not to me it doesn't. 1/2 damage on a miss was one of those things about 4e I disliked. If 5e is just 4e+ then I am not likely to purchase it. Sadly, WotC already split the players. I do not see how they can put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

D&D is not a supers game.

Was it not 1e that gave Fighter the title of "Super Hero" around level 8? I would argue that D&D has been a Supers game since the addition of magic using classes. And I'm cool with that.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

I am fine with that abstraction. One of my favorite HP subsystems was from D20 SW. Vitality (HP) and Wound (effectively your Con). Attacks hit Vit until you were out of Vit, then you were out of luck and you started taking "real" damage. Crits bypassed Vit altogether (instead of multiplying or...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

I consider it a boring feature, not an innovation. YMMV. And in your narrative the Death Knight dies due to his own incompetence. Yay for heroic PCs! :p

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Miss has equaled no damage since 1974. WotC is bold to try to change that for no good reason. If this was another RPG altogether this ability probably wouldn't even raise an eyebrow. But this is D&D, it is an old product that has undergone many changes, and yet despite all those changes a Miss...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

I somewhat disagree. The backwards AC/THAC0 worked just fine for years. Yeah, in retrospec it seems dumb now. I would certainly not go back to it... but it didn't occur to anybody in my 2e group to change it. If I'd told my 2e DM that "I kill this kobold, even though I totally missed his AC"...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Is damage / killing on a miss not silly to you? Whatever. I've played (A)D&D since 89, if you miss on your attack you don't damage thing and you especially don't insta-kill kobolds just because of your background.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

In our PF game that recently died, the DM tried to introduce something like this for *everybody* and it didn't take. It lasted one or two sessions and was never heard from again (everybody deals a d4 dmg on a miss). In my opinion, this is a silly ability, one that I would expect to see on a 4e...
